Pattern: Rosetta

General information

Skill level
Beginner

Abbreviations
Ch: Chain
Sl st: slip stitch
Sc: single crochet
Dc: double crochet
Sk: skip
Sp: space

Special stitches
Ssc: standing single crochet, make a slipknot on your hook, insert hook in space, make a normal sc (yoh, pull through (two loops on hook), yoh, pull through both loops). The ssc counts as a sc throughout the pattern.

Notes
You can make this circle as big as you want. The increases are made in an consistant way. The first time you increase in each chain space, the second time you make one normal dc group, one increase group, and after that you make 2 normal dc groups, one increase etc. Just keep in mind you alternate the increase groups to keep the circular shape.

It isn’t described in the pattern but I joined a new colour for every round and fastened off after finishing the round.

Starting a single crochet round, attach yarn in a ch1 space.

Starting a double crochet round, attach yarn in a ch2 or ch3 space.

Finished measurement
32 cm or 12.5 inches across

Materials
Phildar Coton no. 3
Crochet hook 3.00 mm

Pattern

Circle
The work is never turned at the end of a round. You will get a right side and a wrong side.

Ch 3, sl st to close ring.

Round 1: Ch3, dc in circle, ch1, *dc 2 times in circle, ch1*, repeat between ** four more times, sl st to 3rd ch of ch3.

Round 2: SSc, ch2, sc in first ch sp, (sc, ch2, sc) in each ch sp, sl st to first sc.

Round 3: (Ch2 (does not count as a dc), dc, ch1, dc2tog) in first ch sp, ch1, dc between two sc from previous round, ch1  *dc2tog, ch1, dc2tog, ch1, dc between two sc from previous round, ch1* in each ch sp, sl st to first dc.

Round 4: (Ssc, ch2) in first ch sp, (sc, ch2) in each ch sp, sl st to first sc.

Round 5: Ch3, dc 2 times into ch2 sp, ch1, (dc 3 times, ch1) in each ch2 sp, sl st to 3rd ch of ch3.

Round 6: (Ssc, ch3) in first ch sp, (sc, ch3) in each ch sp, sl st to first sc.

Round 7: Ch3, dc 5 times into ch3 sp, dc 6 times into each ch3 sp, sl st to 3rd ch of ch3.

Round 8: Ssc in between two 6dc groups, ch2, *sc once between 3rd and 4th dc of 6dc group, ch2, sc once between two 6dc groups, ch2* repeat between ** until end of round, sl st in first sc.

Round 9: repeat round 5

Round 10: repeat round 4

Round 11: repeat round 5

Round 12 (prepare for increase round): Ssc, ch2, *sc in ch sp, ch3, sc in next ch sp, ch2*, repeat between ** until last ch sp before end of round, sc in last ch sp, ch3, sl st to first sc.

Round 13: Ch3, dc 2 times in ch2 sp, *dc 6 times in ch3 sp, dc 3 times in ch2 sp* repeat between ** until last ch sp before end of round, dc 6 times in last ch3 sp, sl st to 3rd ch of ch3

Round 14: Ssc in between a 3dc and a 6 dc group, ch2, * sc once between 3rd and 4th dc of 6dc group, ch2, sc once between 6dc and 3dc group, ch2, sc once between 3dc and next 6 dc group, ch2* repeat between** until end of round, sl st to first sc.

Round 15: Repeat round 5

Round 16: Repeat round 4

Round 17: Repeat round 5

You can now either go on and increase and making the circle bigger in the next rounds by repeating round 12- 17.

For round 18 follow the instructions for round 12 but add an extra (sc, ch2) group before your (sc, ch3) group.

For round 19 follow the instructions for round 13 but add an extra 3dc group before your 6dc group. Just keep in mind a dc3 group is always placed in a ch2 sp and a dc6 group in a ch3 sp. Keep working the pattern instructions for round 14 to 17 for subsequent rounds.

Or stop after round 17 and finish off your Rosetta with the border sequence.

To finish off the Rosetta after round 17 repeat round 4 once more and start the border pattern.

Border

Sl st to ch2 sp, ch1, sc two times into ch2 sp, *make a (sc, ch1,dc,ch1,sc) group in next sc, sc two times into ch2 sp*, repeat between ** until first sc of previous round, make the last (sc, ch1, dc, ch1, sc) group into that stitch. Fasten off.

Weave in ends.

  3. Barbara this is so stunning! I wanted to hook it last night but between the kids, the cats, and the TV, I struggled to make sense of the Ssc. As soon as I have "me time" I will try again. I HAVE to make this!

    1. I know what you mean :) Just make a slipknot with a new colour, stick it into a ch space from front to back, yarn over hook, pull through to the front, yarn over hook, pull through both loops. Hope it makes sense and you can find a bit of "you time"!

  12. Thank you for this pretty pattern. I'm unsure about one instruction:
"For round 18 follow the instructions for round 12 but add an extra (sc, ch2) group before your (sc, ch3) group."
Is that extra (sc, ch2) group the one inside the *stars* in round 12, or the one at the end just before the sl st?
    Thanks for your help!

So that you don't have to scroll up to see what I mean, here's your Round 12 instructions: "Ssc, ch2, *sc in ch sp, ch3, sc in next ch sp, ch2*, repeat between ** until last ch sp before end of round, sc in last ch sp, ch3, sl st to first sc."

    1. Hi Kate,
What I try to get across is that for round 12 you make a *sc, ch3, sc, ch2* repeat. In order to increase you do the same trick as if you make a normal dc circle, you start off with two dc in same stitch, then an dc 2 times, 1 dc, and then a dc 2 times, dc once in next two stitches etc. In this pattern this means for round 18 you make a *sc, ch3, sc, ch2, sc, ch2* repeat for the whole round.
      I hope this helps!

  17. Hi, not sure If i am skilled enough to do this but I'm going to try this soon. I have been looking for a circular pattern. Circles are hard! But my daughter saw a jacket made out of a circle pattern. she found the pattern but it is in Russian and i cannot get it in English. She wanted me to do it for my 1 year old grand daughter. I hope i can figure it out

    1. Hi Sarah,

You can use any circle for a circle jacket! If you look up my pinwheel sweater (made in 2013) on the blog I have a link to a free pattern using a circle for a vest! I think it would help you out. It's pretty simple!

  19. Hello! I want to make this for my in-laws new bathroom but I want to use up what's in my yarn stash. Do you think that this will still work up and look somewhat as good if I use a slightly heavier yarn? I was thinking of something like Red Heart Super Saver. What are your thoughts on it? thank you!

  20. Lovely colours! I will be making this as soon as I can finish some of my other projects - afghan. baby blanket, poncho, shopping bag. Oh, and then there are knitting projects too. Just moved recently too so need to locate my finer yarns/threads. Everything has been packed away for so long...Sigh!
