Ola! Que Tal?

En dat zijn 3 van de bijna 10 woorden Spaans die ik ken nog van mijn lessen op de middelbare school (ik kan nog wel dankjewel, goedemorgen en een biertje bestellen).

Over vijf dagen zit ik in het vliegtuig samen met 92 leerlingen, 5 mentoren (waaronder mijzelf), een decaan en een coordinator op weg naar Barcelona voor de 5VWO studiereis.

Zo spannend!

En zo gaandeweg daarnaar toe blijkt dat je eigenlijk meer bezig bent met alles voor je leerlingen te regelen dan voor jezelf. Dat kan niet he, de juf moet ook dingen meenemen en vanalles regelen!

De man heeft de eerbare taak om voor de kids te zorgen, zolang ik maar alles meeneem wat moet aan kleding en voor zoveel mogelijk oplossingen-voor-puberproblemen heb gezorgd is er niks aan de hand denk ik zo.

Dus gisteren heb ik heel snel nog zeepjes bij de Lush gescoord om maar te voorkomen dat ik problemen met vloeistoffen zou krijgen. Je moet weten, het is maar liefst 9 jaar geleden dat ik voor het laatst gevlogen heb, dus het duizelt me een klein beetje van de nieuwe regels.

Ik koos een shampoobar die ik zowel voor mijn haar als lichaam kan gebruiken, een zeepje voor mijn lichaam en een vast blokje olie/serum om na het douchen mijn gezicht in te smeren en mijn handen te verwennen. Wat een heerlijkheid!

Aankomend weekend alles inpakken, alles controleren aan telefoonlijsten en andere leerlingdingen en dan gewoon gaan. Eens kijken of ik die 28 leerlingen van me in bedwang kan houden!

Survival tips of tips waar ik echt naar toe moet in Barcelona hoor ik graag! Ik ben er nog nooit geweest. Ik ga ook nog even Googlen of ik in de buurt kom van een wolwinkel!! Ik ben alleen nog enorm aan het twijfelen of ik wel of niet een haakwerkje meeneem....

I think I can make myself understandable in Spain with a few Spanish words...

In a few days I will be flying off to Barcelona with 92 students and 9 teachers.

O boy I am excited! And a bit terrfied.

I stepped back for a bit yesterday as it seemed as I was only making preparations for my students and was completely forgetting my own lists on what to pack.. 

It's not long, and hubby will be taking care of the kids and as long I have the few basics for teen-problem-fixing in my backpack and my own passport I will be fine right?

I did prepare myself a bit. I am new to the rules of taking along fluids so I thought it would be wise to buy a few soaps at Lush for my hair, body and face. I have already been using them and I like them!

I have chosen a shampoo bar and a face bar for washing up and a solid oil bar as a moisturizer. Smells heavenly.

This weekend will be about packing and arranging the last few things. I am keeping my fingers crossed that my 28 adorable teens will be as cute as a button and as meek as sheeps on the trip (but you know, they're teenagers, they will do something naughty once).

Have you been to Barcelona? Are there places I must go and see? I have a chockfull program but I will have 2 hours on the last day. I will hopefully find a yarn store!

Save-my-ass Teaching (or How Teachers Improvise)

Je moet je voorstellen dat ik eigenlijk zo'n docent ben die heel gelukkig wordt van een goed voorbereide les (en dat hij ook van A tot Z lukt). 

Aantekeningen klaar, powerpointje klaar, opdracht klaar. 

Er zijn jaren geweest dat ik me door de lessen heenblufte puur vanwege het feit dat ik geen tijd had om voor te bereiden toen de kindjes nog klein waren.

Maar soms moet je echt voorbereiden, en is het lastig inplannen. Oeps. Ik had tijdgebrek.

Gisteren hobbelde ik van overleg naar overleg naar overleg. Zelfs in de pauze was ik bezig met overleggen met twee leerlingen over hun profielwerkstuk (al kauwend op een boterham). Eigenlijk had ik op twee tussenuren gerekend, maar die werden door overleg weggesnoept.

En gisteren had ik mijn allereerste echte les over nieuwe stof met 6vwo. En dit is mijn eerste keer 6vwo.....

Ik plukte snel tijdens het uur ervoor (terwijl de leerlingen bezig waren met een opdracht) nog wat plaatjes van internet, plempte dat in een powerpoint en controleerde mijn lesplan half (dat had ik dan weer wel gemaakt).

En de les startte. Het ging goed, het ging lekker, ook al had ik niet alle termen pats boem klaar, linkjes leggen, een vergelijking op het bord over negatieve terugkoppeling en positieve terugkoppeling. Negatieve terugkoppeling is een makkie, maar al pratend maakte mijn brein overuren over de positieve terugkoppeling....

Ik gokte een voorbeeld voor op het bord. Al pratend keek ik nog eens goed naar mijn tekening en dacht: "He? Wat bazel ik nou? Klopt dit? " en raakte de draad kwijt! Paniek in mijn hoofd, maar je moet koel blijven in zo'n situatie. Laat de leerlingen het vooral niet merken.

Ik improviseerde: "Jongens, dit is niet het beste voorbeeld, zoek in je Binas een betere!" en zwaaide de deur open van het kabinet en siste "Aaaaaaaaaargh, ik ben mijn verhaal kwijt!". De collega die daar zat moest lachen.

Dus vrijdag (als ik ze weer zie) doen alsof er niets gebeurd is, ze laten beginnen met definities in het schrift schrijven en dan zorg ik dat ik het weer tot in de puntjes verzorgd heb.

Improviseren is iets wat ik heb moeten leren, doodeng vond ik een onvoorbereide les toen ik startte met lesgeven. Maar het is een kunst die elke docent van pas komt, want lesgeven is iets dat een soort van actie-reactie baan is. Niets is zeker met lesgeven, denk maar aan leerlingen die de boel verstoren of een coordinator die binnenkomt of een leerling die flauwvalt tijdens een ontleed practicum (jaja echt gebeurd). Ik raad beginnend docenten aan om niet al te vast te houden aan een presentatie of lesplan. Laat het soms eens los (niet altijd natuurlijk) en kijk wat er gebeurt. Vaak vinden dan de leukste lessen plaats of krijg je als docent een briljant idee voor volgende lessen.

P.S. ik vond uiteindelijk een goed voorbeeld van een positieve terugkoppeling, met oxytocine, maar die ga ik voor alle zekerheid nog goed controleren. Ik duik nog even in de stof!

I liked to be thinked of as a teacher who prepares her lessons and crosses her t's and dots her i's.

This has not always been the case, and when the kids were small I improvised a lot.

It's not fun though and I like to start a class knowing what I want to teach and have a plan and a powerpoint and an assignment. Well prepared!

Yesterday I had a little bit of a problem with time management and instead of the time I thought I had to prepare my 12th grade class (it's my first time teaching 12th grade) I ran from meeting to meeting to meeting, had a mini-meeting with two studens and just had no time left.

I started my 11th grade class and while they were working I managed to copy paste some figures into a Powerpoint, checked my lessonplan in a few seconds and was "ready" to start my 12th grade class.

Or so I thought.

I rambled through a few slides easily, trying to point out the important words and trying to explain them correctly. Then I started a comparison on the blackboard, drawing a negative feedback loop (we were talking about homeostasis) and turned my attention to the positive feedback loop. The truth is, a negative feedback loop is easy peasy. I have explained with dozens of examples in the last few years.

But I could not find a good example of a positive feedback loop in my head. I started drawing the first thing that popped into my head and kept talking.

And then I stepped back and looked at it and I thought "Whaaaaat? What did I just draw? Is this right?"

In a split second I turned around, my mind frantically thinking of how to save my ass (really that's what I thought, the most important thing is not let the kids know you messed up and you need to correct in) and blurted: "This is not the best example, find a better one in your textbook!" 

Whilst collecting my own book in our biology office I blurted out to a colleague: "Aaaaaargh I lost my story!" and he laughed so much.

We understand.

Sometimes we just mess up. And you need to improvise. I will get back to the subject in next class but I had to let it go and let them sort it out a bit. It worked.

It is really hard to get used to when you are starting to teach but is an art every teacher must learn. It can be used in any lesson disturbed by either a student or other teacher walking in, a fainting student during a science class etc. As a teacher you have to improvise sometimes.

So step away from the lesson plan sometimes be it willingly or driven by the situation and go with the flow.

During those improvised lessons beautiful things happen.

Getting Ready for the New School Year (DIY Planner)

Jaja, nog maar een paar nachtjes en dan mogen we weer!

De bovenste helft van Nederland is alweer begonnen met school, maar maandag is het Midden aan de beurt.

 

Net als vorig jaar maakte ik dit jaar mijn eigen agenda. Ik ging alleen een stapje verder. Hoe fijn een A4 agenda ook was, ik wilde toch een maatje kleiner, naar A5 want dat is makkelijker meenemen.

 

Ik twijfelde enorm tussen een Filofax en een Midori. Maar een Filofax is makkelijker te krijgen in A5 dan het leuke Japanse systeem dat meer op de Amerikaanse maten van "half letter" is afgestemd. Na veel Marktplaats zoektochten en een enorme hoeveelheid pins op Pinterest (ik heb een speciaal bord gemaakt voor allerlei printables!) kocht ik tweedehands een Filofax! 

 

Ik bouwde mijn eigen (ongedateerde) agenda met behulp van de site Philofaxy en printte gisteren een een selectie van mijn opgeslagen printables uit (op Pinterest gevonden).

 

Vorig jaar starte ik ook met bullet journalling (to do lijstjes met bepaalde tekentjes zodat je kunt aangeven of het wel of niet af is, belangrijk is etc) en dat deed ik in een notitieboekje. Nu gaat alles in de Filofax!

 

Nieuw voor mij is nu het "colour coding" systeem. Op mijn maandoverzichten geef ik nu met een kleur aan wat wat is. Een kleur voor alles wat met mijn mentoraat te maken heeft of thuis. Ik denk dat dit me gaat helpen om nog een tandje georganiseerder te worden!

Alle tabbladen maakte ik met gekleurd papier uit de Flow for paper lovers en lamineerde ik op school.

 

Het plan is om een lekker kleurige agenda te krijgen!
Het weekoverzicht en de week zelf maakte ik met behulp van 2 dagen per pagina van Philofaxy en Word.
Het maandoverzicht haald ik van internet maar ik weet even niet meer waar!

It is almost time to get up and go to school again. Time has flown by!

 

Just like last year I wanted to make my own planner. I loved my planner from last year, I could flop it open and see everything in glance. I had so much space to scribble notes!

 

The only downside was the size of the planner, so I wanted to downsize to an A5.

 

I pondered and pinned lots of planner options on Pinterest (special board for lots of printables!) and narrowed my options to either a Filofax or a Midori.

 

The easiest would be a Filofax so I started searching for a secondhand A5 Filofax on the Dutch Craigslist. And I found it!

 

Then, from all the pins I pinned, I picked and chose the printables I really needed and made an undated planner for the whole week with help of Philofaxy.

 

It is done and I love the result.

New to me is the whole colour coding system, so I will try it (I think it is a keeper already) on my monthly pages. One colour for my dean tasks, for school tasks and home etc. I love it! It looks so organized.

 

You can find all the printables I have used on my pinterest board. I made my own tabs with colourful paper from "Flow for paper lovers" and laminated them.

Bounce Back

Het zijn de afgelopen twee weken enorm stressvolle tijden geweest. Te weinig tijd, te veel te doen, je kent het wel. Halve weekenden kwijt door werk/congres. Maar het liep even de spuigaten uit afgelopen woensdag en donderdag. De hoeveelheid werk die opeens uit school meekwam was ongelofelijk. Profielwerkstukbegeleiding waarbij mijn leerlingen natuurlijk in de laatste week allemaal feedback wilde hebben (hadden ze al twee keer gehad maar goed), schoolexamens die af moesten, strubbelingen binnen onze biologie groep en ook het inzetten van vernieuwingen die ons opgelegd zijn door de schoolinspectie.

Ik was kapot. En mijn arme vent kreeg de volle laag. Toen gister ook eindelijk de Open Dag op mijn school geweest was kon ik relaxen. Een last viel van mijn schouders!

Ik moet wel zeggen dat ik het nu even achter me kan laten. Het blijft gelukkig niet meer malen zoals vroeger. Vandaag chill ik. Ik ben de afgelopen weken ook bezig geweest met haakprojectjes en binnenkort kan ik weer lekker iets aan gratis patronen plaatsen. Man, wat geeft me dat een kick.

Maar voor nu, mensen, geniet van deze Zondag! Blijf ademen!

The past two weeks were quite stressfull. So many things to do, so little time, you probably know the drill. The effects were noticeable however. I got quite stressed out last Wednesday and Thursday. The amount of stuff coming home from school was immensely, physically and emotionally. I have to coach 6 groups of lastgraders, GCSE's that had to be graded (again), friction in our group of teachers and new guidelines for teaching and classroom organization that have to be implemented.

I was exhausted. And my poor hubby got the full load. Yesterday after the Open Door Day I finally had the feeling I could breathe and relax. The whole burden fell from my shoulders!

Even though it was quite bad I do have to say I bounced back. We'll see what happens this week. I do not have some nagging critical voice in the back of my head repeating that I have to do a gazillion things.

In between the chaos I even got time to finish up some small projects which will be free patterns in the future! I love to publish those :)

Make your own Diary!

After years of finding the perfect solution for keeping track of my teaching/private life onto paper I almost gave in to the idea that there was no perfect solution. No perfect diary to have enough writing space the homework of my students, no nifty  and easy to find pages for to-do lists, and have a whole week on two pages.

After finding a pin on Pinterest about Teacher Books I let myself suck into the huge amount of information of building your Own Personal Teacher Book. I had never ever heard of it! And since I wanted to get organized this year......

Most of the formats I found were in a different layout than I use in my school. The main difference between High School in the US and the Netherlands is that I teach my classes for 50 minutes divided over 1 to 3 times a week. In the US it's more divided into mornings and afternoons. Another difference I found was that keeping track of grades was different. We do not have semesters or quarter years! But I managed to alter quite a bit of things to my own taste!

This is what I did during two days of browsing for ideas & trying things out in Word:
I made a week schedule which has big text boxes for working days, small ones for my days off and lots of space to jot down to-do lists and notes. In the header I kept month and week blanc. Then I added pages downloaded from different blogs and websites such as a calendar and colourful note pages.
I printed most of it at work, got all of my lists with my new classes on the first day, got on the bike with Kathelijne on my first day off and and got it binded at a copy shop with a metal ring binder. Done.

I love it!!!! I can write down anything I want and I open it up during class and have a complete week in a glance plus everything I need to do besides teaching! It is completely custom and I can test what I like and alter it myself. And I can doodle and colour away :) Absolute love!

Al jaren ben ik op zoek naar de perfecte agenda. Een agenda waarin ik makkelijk alles voor school en prive kan bijhouden. De ene agenda was weer perfect om al het huiswerk op te schrijven, de ander weer perfect voor het overzicht etc etc. Ik miste een hoop dingen zoals cijferlijsten, ruimte, ruimte in de week zelf voor notities en ik heb er zo veel uitgeprobeerd! Mijn favoriet was wel de Moleskin maar ook deze was niet perfect....

Op Pinterest vond ik in de laatste week van de vakantie opeens een pin over Teacher Books. In Amerika is het dus best wel hip om een eigen samengestelde Teacher Book te hebben. Een hoop kleurrijke bladen en formats kwamen voorbij en ik was enthousiast! Mijn eigen agenda zelf gemaakt? Klinkt als "doen"!

Een hoop was op het Amerikaanse systeem gericht maar na wat gepuzzel in Word en een hoop geGoogle vond ik de juiste dingen om een agenda te maken die echt de Nederlandse lesuren weergeeft en ook het juiste systeem voor cijfers.
Ik maakte met tekstvakken een weekoverzicht waarin ik de maand en week leegliet (om zelf dus in te vullen) en zorgde dat mijn werkdagen groot genoeg waren en mijn vrije dagen klein. En nog wat vakken voor to-do lijstjes en notities! Ik gebruikte wat leuke fonts en leukte ook de tekstvakken op. Klaar!

Op school draaide ik de formulieren voor vergaderingen, cijfers en kalenders uit, maakte de agenda (dubbelzijdig 80 grams papier) plus mijn klassenlijsten en fietste op mijn eerste vrije dag met Kathelijne naar een copyshop om hem in te laten binden. Klaar!

Ik vind hem echt he-le-maal geweldig. De agenda is hoe ik ben. Ik kan overal schrijven, ik heb het overzicht als ik hem opensla en zowel werk als prive staat er in. Ik kan doodelen en kleuren als ik dat wil tijdens vergaderingen ofzo. Heer-lijk! Dit jaar neem ik om hem te testen. Volgend jaar kan ik dan een aanpassing maken. Ik ben verliefd!

First Day

Well, day one of teaching is over! Finished!

I spent my day on an adrenaline high, jumping and being hyperactive. My students must think I am a little bit odd haha. I got to know them for a bit and introduced them to me, the books, the classrooms and my rules. It is always a bit exciting to look at those new and old faces and have a quick glance at the interaction between them in a new year and a new setting. But! I can only say I am pleased at what I saw yesterday, they are superb. Lots of familiar faces, lots of new faces. It always feels like a privilege to be a part of a kids' life for several years in a row, and there are a few who are in my class for the third year in a row. It feels so very special.

I am so happy to be back to school!

Dag 1 is alweer voorbij. We zijn weer terug op school!

Ik heb gisteren al stuiterend, vol met adrenaline, en aan het einde compleet melig, kennisgemaakt met mijn nieuwe leerlingen. Ze zullen wel gedacht hebbeb: "Die is niet wijs!" Alle namen en gezichten probeer ik te onthouden, en ik heb hen kennis laten maken met mijzelf, mijn regels, de boeken en de lokalen. Heerlijkheid. Het is altijd spannend om die eerste uren die nieuwe en bekende gezichten te zien en om alvast goed te kijken wat er voor interactie is tussen de leerlingen (die natuurlijk ook vaak in een nieuwe groep geplaatst zijn). Maar ik ben tot nu toe heel erg blij met de groepen die ik heb gekregen! Zo gezellig. Heel veel oude bekenden, heel veel nieuwe gezichten. Het voelt ieder jaar weer als een privilege dat je bij sommigen een aantal jaren achter elkaar een plekje mag hebben in het leven van een leerling. Zo'n speciaal gevoel, echt fijn.

Ik ben superblij om weer lekker voor de klas te staan!

She was only 17..

"She" is one of my students...

I watched the news last night and let it all soak in but also minded my own business.
Until someone from school phoned when I was already lying in bed. The first thought that crossed my mind "if someone is calling at this hour something bad has happened".

And it was.

One of my students was in Malaysian Airlines flight MH17 that was shot down in Ukrain yesterday afternoon. She was on her way to her vacation address in Kuala Lumpur. Along with her mother, stepdad and stepbrother.

It is impossible to describe what I felt when I hear the news and what I am feeling today.  It feels like a deep deep hole in my hear.

This morning we took care of her classmates and took care of ourselves, the teachers. We mourned for her loss. Most of us cried, most of us hugged, both teachers and students.

And the news got even worse.

The best friend of the principal was also on that plane.

As was a friend of the daughter of a colleague.

And the training buddy of a colleague.

And the brother of a friend of one of our laboratory assistents.

It was devastating to hear this.


I mourn deeply for all of the people who were on that plane, and feel terribly sorry for all of the family members and friends left behind.

So sorry.

Autumn Vacation

 

It has been a bit of a "backstage" week, as I was MIA over here. It was filled with doing the last things before the Autumn vacation. Prepping the last lessons. Collecting papers for grading.

Feeling exhausted.

But trying to keep myself occupied with the kids and enjoying them.

Autumn is peeking around the corner at the moment. Because of the rain during the last weeks Nature decided to postpone the onset of Autumn in the Netherlands. Finally the trees are starting to fade into their yellow colour, and tips of leaves are turning red.

In a week or two it will be definately Autumn.

But for now I am going to enjoy a week of nothing. As if doing nothing exists over here. No, what I mean is that I really really like the idea of a week of not having to race to school, no working hours. Just days to fill in just as we want.

P.S. I've hinted here and there to a certain thing that is going to happen. In a week, maybe two, there will be a new feature on the blog. I am working very very hard and am immensely excited!

Ik ga toch maar weer een beetje proberen tweetalig bezig te zijn hier!

Zoals jullie wel gemerkt hebben is het aardig rustig op dit plekje. Ik had mijn laatste week op school voor de herfstvakantie en dat was toch wel drukker dan verwacht met nakijkwerk verzamelen en de laatste lessen voorbereiden.

Ik heb heel hard geprobeerd om vooral relaxed te blijven en te blijven genieten.

Het valt me enorm op dat de bladeren aan de bomen nog niet hun herfstige uiterlijk hebben gekregen. Waarschijnlijk heeft dit te maken met de regen die maar bleef komen de laatste weken. Gelukkig is het verkleuringsproces aan de gang en gaat het toch echt echt Herfst worden.

Nu, nu ga ik lekker een weekje 'niks' doen. Als in; geen gerace naar school, geen werktijden waar je rekening mee hoeft te houden. Gewoon lekker zelf inplannen deze dagen.

Een hele fijne herfstvakantie voor iedereen!

P.S. Ik heb de afgelopen tijd wat hints laten vallen dat er iets gaat gebeuren. Over een week, uiterlijk twee, gaat er een nieuwe feature op de blog van start! Ik heb er heel veel zin in om jullie te laten zien waar ik de afgelopen tijd aan heb gewerkt!

Terrarium

Quite a few months ago Big Man sent me a  link about a closed terrarium. A plant that has been growing for over 40 years sealed shut in a bottle. The story is awesome, and the whole idea seemed a very nice one to experiment with together with some students but somehow it slipped out of my mind. Really, how could I have forgot? A whole ecosystem in a glass bottle!

Until Monday when I saw a lovely pin of a closed terrarium on my Pinterest wall. The whole idea came back but it still seems a bit too adventuruous at the moment. You need quite a bit of special equipment for it and those beautiful big glass bottles aren't cheap. Maybe one day...

So I decided to try an open terrarium! They look nice and simple, and they should be low maintenance because they retain moisture more than in open pots if you pick a container that is several inches higher than your plants.

This is what you need:

Glass jar/container

Small pebbles

Soil

Baby plants

I bought some pebbles at the local gardening centre and used a glass container which was doing nothing on a bookshelf. I also bought three little baby plants, but if I ever am going to make a closed terrarium, these plants will really need to be baby baby plants. The little plant on the right was too big!

Meanwhile, I was busy anyway, I also transferred another very sad plant to a bigger pot and I really hope that he will flourish a bit. I am not terribly good with plants as I always forget to water them or give them plant food.... Maybe he will forgive me and grow a bit taller and wider!

 

Two out of three baby plants got into the open container but I have to tell you, it was quite an adventure to position them correctly. I really need to figure out how to get them into a big bottle.....

 

  

Doesn't it look lovely? I hope they will grow slowly (as they should be doing) and will not need much water. I am so pleased with how it looks!

The third baby plant got its own glass yar with some pebbles and soil and we'll see how he does.

 

I also completely cleaned out my kitchen window and here's how it looks! I threw out my old watering can and am now using a thrifted coffee can. I love love love it. I don't know why I thought of this sooner!

I thought it would be fun to make a follow up to my post last year, about a normal working day for me. But now with pictures!

5.20 AM Time to get up!! I do not  have any pictures of our morning routine. It is soooo busy. Getting dressed, getting the kids dressed, make lunches etc

6.45 Rush out of the door

7.00 Drop kids at our daycare provider

7.15 My tram!

8.00 Walk into the school, and setting up a science lab assignment. My 5th year has to assess the activity of amylase (enzyme) in their spit on maltose, fun!

8.15 Starting Science Lab!

Very busy, so busy, my pupils! They are great kids.

9.15 Break, first coffee of the day

After that I have some time to prepare lessons, check my mail, grade some work and all that stuff.

 

12.00 Finishing up a Powerpoint for my General Science class about astronomy. I was very pleased with myself, it looked very snazzy.

12.25 Starting my General Science class. The Powerpoint presentation was not very appealing to this class unfortunately...bummer! Need to do some checking and altering.

14.00 My firstyear students come in my classroom. Talking to them about cells!



15.00 Finishing up the amylase assignment with my 5th year. Looking good (measuring absorbance)!

16.00 Meeting for our Open House day in January

17.00 Run out of school to the tram, going home!

18.00 Home, where Little Man has built this fantasy Lego stairs. It is such a creative little man.



18.15 Sitting down for dinner. Home! Big Man made these meat balls. They were lovely!

And that was a normal day for me. It will probably look familiar to other teachers!
