VAT Mess for Independent Sellers

I really wanted to post a happy post about some cute or beautiful project I had found, but I had received news about new VAT rules that will be applied from January 1st 2015.
It is basically that every EU consumer has to pay VAT over digital services such as PDF knitting/crochet patterns. Plus there is no threshold anymore, so any VAT a seller receives should be noted and paid to the EU.
You can imagine something of a bomb exploded on Etsy and Ravelry. They had very short notice to implement a new design and a way to monitor VAT and collect it. Etsy did not do it in time, Ravelry barely. Most of the Ravelry designers now have the help of loveknitting.com which collects and pays VAT for the independent sellers.

Some sellers were so shocked by the news that they closed up their Etsy shop or opt out to sell to EU consumers for the time being. So be aware that it could be that your favorite designers are closed.... Others made the option to PM them and ask for a private listing so that they can monitor the amount of VAT.

You can imagine this is a huge burden for small independent business owners.... I keep my fingers crossed for now, and do nothing and hope something will change....

Gosh. I do not know yet how I am going to be afflicted. My tax office is closed at the moment, but I am not happy!

  2. Some designers have worked a way around it. When you sell a pattern you aren't just offering a digital download. You are offering a support service offering help with the pattern. Therefore it isn't just a digital download it's a service so is exempt from the tax changes.

    1. I don't know if that will work in the Netherlands. The overall VAT list of items clearly states "knitting patterns" as a product that is now taxable...
