A few weeks ago I was browsing the web for the new Winter '14/'15 yarns (more about that later) and I realised they were mostly very very chunky yarns and just irresistable to ignore. Just way too beautiful and too tempting to splurge on a few balls. Oooo I love chunkier-than-average yarns! They make projects easy peasy quick.
But I've noticed that there is a certain problem: Big Ergonomic Hooks are hard to find... Especially if you adore working with ergonomic hooks! Not all ergonomic crochet hook brands such as Tulip or Clover make them in aluminum. I do have a few acrylic Clover ones, but I find them a bit too "sticky".
Most crochet sets go up to 6.00 mm or J, maybe K but that's about it.
Een paar weken geleden was ik nieuwsgierig en was ik aan het struinen op het net voor de nieuwe garens voor de Winter van '14/'15 (daar komt nog meer over) en ik zag vooral van die lekkere dikke garens. Onweerstaanbaar. Ik vind dat zo mooi die lekkere dikke wollen draden en het was dus te verleidelijk om geen garen te kopen. Ik vind het fijn om een project snel af te hebben dus tsja, ik heb wat bollen gekocht.
Maar er is altijd een beetje een probleem heb ik gemerkt: bij ergonomische haaknaalden is het niet zo dat alle grote merken ook de grotere maten maken. Dat is wel balen voor degenen die het fijn vinden om met aluminium haaknaalden te werken (ik dus). Ik heb wel een paar plastic Clovers maar die vind ik teveel "plakken".
De meeste haaksets gaan tot 6 mm/J, misschien K, maar dan houdt het ook op.
I literally squealed the moment an update from
Echtstudio popped up on my Facebook timeline about the new BIG hooks in the
KnitPro Waves series. Finally! Ergonomic hooks aluminum hooks beyond 6.00 mm!!
Ik deed letterlijk een piepje toen ik een update van Echtstudio voorbij zag komen op Facebook over de nieuwe Grote Haaknaalden van de KnitPro Waves serie. Eindelijk!! Ergonomische aluminium haaknaalden groter dan 6 mm!
Ofcourse I couldn't resist and ordered two sizes of the hooks (7 and 8 mm) to use for a few balls of wintery yarn.
I started a hat and used the 7 mm hook (recommended hook size was 9 mm but I tend to crochet very loose). I was surprised that the hook felt very lightweight, very smooth and very comfortable to hold with my fingers. You do notice that working with chunkier yarn is more strenous on your muscles, hands and wrists, but it is so much better than the Clover acrylic hooks or bamboo hooks I used to resort to. On the downside, I did not notice a difference in splitting the yarn with a hook (because the strand is so big) but I think chunkier the yarn, the more prone it is too splitting. It happened to me a few times that I had to wiggle my hook into a slip stitch with the big tip of the hook and ended up in the yarn strand. I think this is normal, but just wanted to mention that the hook is not
that slippery.
Natuurlijk kon ik dit niet aan me voorbij laten gaan en dus bestelde ik twee maten (7 en 8 mm) om te proberen met een wollen dik wintergaren.
Ik startte een muts en gebruikte de 7 mm (9 mm werd aangeraden maar ik haak nogal los). Ik was verbaasd dat de haaknaald zo licht was, heel glad en eigenlijk lekker comfortabel tussen mijn vingers voelde. Je merkt wel dat je meer kracht moet zetten omdat je met dikker materiaal werkt, maar dit was zoveel beter dan de plastic Clover naalden of bamboe haaknaalden die ik hiervoor gebruikte. Als enig nadeel merkte ik dat ik geen verschil met andere naalden bemerkte als het gaat om het splijten van garen met je naald. Ik denk dat dat er eigenlijk wel bij hoort. Het is me een paar keer gebeurd dat ik behoorlijk moest wringen om in een halve vaste te komen en dat ik dus door de draad heen stak. Het is denk ik normaal, maar ik wilde dit wel vermelden om duidelijk te maken dat de naald niet heel erg glad is.

Verdict? A+ and you know, they aren't that expensive either. KnitPro, thank you for giving us a 7, 8, 9, 10 and 12 mm (Echtstudio does not seem to stock the 10 mm but it does exist! It's the jade one)!
Hierboven de volledige serie van Knit Pro Waves haaknaalden. Kijk nou toch! Wat een heerlijkheid met al die kleuren.
Mijn mening? Ik zeg een 10+ voor het feit dat ze lekker in de hand liggen, licht zijn en dat de prijs heel mooi is gezien de kwaliteit. Knit Pro, dank je wel voor de grote maten 7,8,9,10 en 12 mm (ik zie nu dat Echtstudio geen 10 mm heeft, maar hij bestaat wel! Het is de jadekleurige)!
