Fruit & Groente CAL // Fruit & Veggies CAL -- Deel 1

Hoera! Het is vrijdag 16 juni en dit is de officiele start van de nieuwe CAL!

We doen het lekker rustig aan deze CAL :)

De komende vrijdagen post ik allerlei patroontjes voor groente en fruit waarvan je zoveel kunt haken als je wilt, maar ook in je eigen kleuren, smaak, noem maar op!

Ik lever het patroontje, jullie de haaknaald en het garen :)

Wat heb je nodig?
Zoek vooral katoen of katoen/acryl mixen waarbij een haaknaald tussen de 3 en 4 geadviseerd wordt. Ik heb voor een aantal patroontjes Scheepjes Stonewashed Denim, Scheepjes Softfun en Katia Cotton Jeans gebruikt.
Om te haken gebruikte ik haaknaald 3 mm voor deze patroontjes.
Verder heb je een stopnaald en knuffelvulling nodig. Per patroon zal ik ook aangeven wat je nodig hebt.

Huzzah! It's Friday June 16th so today it's the official start of the new CAL!

We'll take it slow this CAL, so no worries. It's the end of the schoolyear and  I will provide you with easy-to-do patterns of some lovely fruit and veggies.

I will provide the pattern/tutorials, and if you bring along yarn and hook then it's a date.

What you will need:
Dive in your stash and pick up some light worsted/dk weight cotton or cotton/acrylic mixed yarns.
I have used several yarns such as Scheepjes Stonewashed Denim, Scheepjes Softfun and Katia Cotton Jeans. You can use any yarn brand you like!
These yarns advice a hook between 3 and 4 mm and I have been using hook size 3 mm or D (but I tend to crochet quite loose).
On the haberdashery side you will need a darning needle and some fiberfill.

Shoppen bij de Wolwinkel! Hoe maak je geen miskoop? // Yarn shopping! How to do it perfectly?

Je kent dat wel. Je staat met je kopietje/printje of je pin op Pinterest in de wolwinkel en je staart naar de muur afgeladen met heerlijke wolletjes... Of je loopt zomaar spontaan een winkel in waar ze garens hebben en de verleiding is gewoon. te. groot. De keuze is reuze, en je weet het niet meer!

Wat doe je dan? Wolletjes negeren? Nooit! :)

Met een goede voorbereiding loop je heppiedepeppie de wolwinkel uit. Ik geef je een 5-stappenplan om blij de winkel met de juiste bolletjes uit te lopen.

Stap 1:  Wel of geen haak/brei idee?

Een plan is altijd goed, maar als je net zoals ik bent stap je wel eens een (wol) winkel in zonder de intentie om iets te kopen, maar dat dan toch zomaar wolletjes mee naar huis gaan. Het fijnst is als je een patroon leuk vindt er een printje van maakt en met die informatie naar de winkel loopt. Dan weet je ten eerste welk merk er wordt aangeraden, ten tweede hoeveel meters je nodig hebt en ten derde welke extra materialen je nodig hebt.

Aanraders zijn Ravelry, Craftsy en natuurlijk Pinterest. Drops Garnstudio heeft ook een heleboel gratis patronen met goede informatie.

Heb je geen idee? Gooi dan een muntje op :) Nee geintje. Als ik garen koop voor een project, dat meestal een shawl wordt) dan zorg ik dat ik ongeveer 600 meter meeneem van een sokkengaren, of iets van 400 van een dikker garen. Maar dit weet ik door ervaring. Er zijn standaard hoeveelheden ook voor sokken (400 meter) en truien (ongeveer 1200 meter). Hier kunnen ze je prima mee helpen in de winkel.

Stap 2: Lees. De. Wikkel. (en voel ondertussen even aan de heerlijkheid)

De wikkel of band heeft informatie over de stekenverhouding, welke naald je kunt gebruiken, de samenstelling van het garen en wasinstructies. Als je er voor kiest om een ander garen te gebruiken dan in het originele patroon dan is dit je houvast om een juist alternatief te kiezen. Hoeveel steken en toeren er in 10 cm zitten bij het originele garen moet dan overeen komen met de verhouding van het garen dat je wilt gaan gebruiken en goed kijken naar dezelfde samenstelling is ook belangrijk. De Amerikanen hebben daar een beter systeem voor met cijfertjes voor de garendikte. In Europa zouden ze dat ook moeten doen!

Stap 3: Zit je in het goede seizoen?

Het is net als de mode: als wij hier zitten te koukleumen in onze warme trui, zijn de modellen op de catwalk bikini's aan het showen. In de herfst komen de wintergarens in de winkel en in de lente druppelen de zomergarens in de winkel. De meeste breisters/haaksters zijn bezig voor het tegenovergestelde seizoen! Dus in de zomer brei je je wintertrui. Als je in de zomer iets voor in de winter wilt maken zul je soms moeten vragen naar wat de eigenaar van een wolwinkel achter heeft liggen, hetzelfde geldt voor zomergarens. Laat je niet afschrikken door wat er in de winkel ligt, eigenlijk alle wolwinkels hebben collecties achter liggen.

Stap 4: Meters scoren

Als je twijfelt, koop een bolletje extra. De meeste winkels hebben de service dat je overgebleven bolletjes mag retourneren. Het zou zonde zijn als je tekort komt en dat dan blijkt dat je verfbad uitverkocht is of dat er helemaal geen garen meer is. Stel nu dat je een garen in de uitverkoop koopt, dan zeker weten een extra bol meenemen!

Stap 5: Ben je compleet?

Heb je alles? Haaknaalden? Ook een maatje kleiner/groter? Oogjes? Vulling? Stopnaald? Andere extra's? Werk je lijstje af. Ik heb wel eens zo gezeten dat ik lekker bezig was op zaterdag, maar dan er achter kwam dat ik iets nodig had en dus tot mijn eerste vrije dag (woensdag) moest wachten om weer naar de wolwinkel te kunnen.....

P.S. Niet bij alle winkels kan dit, maar als de service top is dan mag je soms ook het garen even testen voordat je het koopt. Je kunt het altijd vragen!

You probably know the feeling. You are standing in a LYS, with your print out of your chosen pattern and you are flabbergasted and mesmerized by the walls filled with woolly yummyness.. Or you happen to pass by a LYS on accident (yeah right ;) ) and all the balls are asking to come home with you. So many too choose from and you get lost.

What to do? Ignore them? Never! :)

Here's a 5-step check list to come prepared to a LYS and pick the perfect yarn from the shelf.

Step 1: To have or have no idea

A plan is always good, but sometimes you are just randomly going to the shopping street and find yourself in a LYS. It happens. The best case scenario would be that you have found an amazing new pattern. Print, or take along your phone, and step into the yarn heaven of your choice. Make sure the pattern states the recommended yarn, the meterage/yardage and the tools you need.

My choice of pattern databases are Ravelry, Craftsy and Pinterest! Drops Garnstudio also has lots of free patterns.

If you are visiting a LYS on a whim you can go out with something nice for your stash. Be sure to get a standard amount for a future project. A shawl needs about 400 (dk weight) to 800 (sock weight) meters of yarn, a sweater is between 12-14 balls and a blanket needs about 1500 yards. These are kind of standard amounts and the owner of a LYS will be very happy to guide you with choosing the perfect amount so you won't be in for surprises when you will actually start a WiP.

Step 2: Read. The. Ballband (and squeeze the yarn while you are holding it, feel the yummyness!)

The ball band is extremely important when picking out the perfect yarn. It states needle size, washing requierements, gauge, and the composition of the yarn (I will get into ball bands in the near future). For now, keep an eye on gauge. If you have your chosen pattern it will probably have either a stated gauge or a needle size recommendation. Lay this next to the ball band and find a matching yarn (or just choose the yarn that is mentioned in the pattern but where is the fun in that ;) ). I think the American knitters/hookers did a great job with their yarn weight system and I would love to have such a system used by our European yarn manufacturers!

Step 3: The right season?

It's like the fashion shows. When we are freezing our ass off, the models on the runway are showing off bikinis. Early auttumn LYS owners will quickly turnover the shop to winter and in early spring they are laying out the summer collection. Most knitters and crocheters are working on the opposite season. Most LYS owners keep the seasonal collections in the back of the store and they won't bat an eye if you are looking for the thickest winter yarn when three quarters of the store is filled with the lightweight cotton for spring.
Step 4: The more the better

When in doubt, buy a spare ball. Do not hesitate, especially when you are on the verge of buying a type of yarn that is going to be discontinued. Most shops take leftover balls back and do a cash return. No worries!
Step 5: Everything checked off?

Do you have all the necessities? Yarn? Hooks? Smaller or bigger hook size (just in case)? Safety eyes? Darning needle? Fiber filling? Any other extra's?  It has happened more than once that I found out on a Saturday late afternoon I needed something right now to finish a pattern and I had to wait until my next day off (a wednesday) to buy it.....

There you have it! Five easy to check off steps for your perfect LYS visit. Did I miss anything?

Goedkoop of niet? // Budget or not?

Zo met Sinterklaas en Kerst voor de deur start ik een "awareness" campagne.
Te vaak zie ik een gezicht met twee kanten in Facebook groepen:
- het ene gezicht roept: "Ik koop bij Zeeman/Wibra/Action want al het andere is zo duur!"
- het andere gezicht roept: "Kijk eens hoeveel ik heb ingeslagen!" met foto en al.

Lieve mensen, als je deze twee gezichten met elkaar combineert, is dan kopen bij een plaatselijke wolwinkel echt duurder? Of is dat het idee dat dat zo is? Mijn eigen lieve wolwinkel heeft naast wat luxere garens ook budget garen. Garen dat maar 10 cent scheelt met de plaatselijke outlet winkel.

Ik denk dat dit een idee is waar men maar moeilijk vanaf komt. Voor veel mensen staat een wolwinkel gelijk aan "duur". 

Ook ik koop garen bij de grote giganten, maar mijn verhouding is denk 80% bij een echte wolwinkel, tegenover 20% bij een gigant. Een gigant kun je lekker binnenlopen en zonder dat je bankrekening hard wordt geplunderd kun je best wel veel garens kopen.... Maar toch ga ik liever naar een echte wolwinkel...


Zonder wolwinkels, waar we de afgelopen  maanden in Nederland weer zo'n stuk of drie van verloren (waaronder in Rotterdam), gaan we echt iets missen.

Geen advies meer als je de winkel inloopt. Geen gezellige brei-avonden. Geen hulp bij het uitzoeken van garens. Geen miljoen kleuren waar je uit kan kiezen of eventueel bij kunt bestellen. Geen mooie nieuwe wolletjes die geproduceerd worden, want als de wolwinkels vallen, gaan de garenproducenten dit ook merken....

Willen we dat? Ik niet. Mijn eigen wolwinkel worstelt heel hard. Ze willen heel graag blijven maar zullen volgend jaar moeten kijken of het nog haalbaar is. Zonde toch?

Steun de wolwinkel. Loop eens naar binnen voor jezelf of voor een cadeautje. We bijten niet, we willen alleen blijven bestaan.. En het verhaal gaat zelfs zo ver dat dat bolletje echte wol wat je koopt bij een wolwinkel ook de schaapsherder die aan de basis staat steunt.

With less than 50 days until Christmas I wanted to start a yarn awareness campaign. Yarn shops are struggling to keep themselves open in the "battle against the giant retailers".

After a very good conversation with the owner of my own LYS I am determined to ask for your help.

Yes I know there is an economic recess.
Yes I know money is tight.

But I do ask you: step into your own LYS once in a while. Ask around for yarn prices, weigh the options. Buy something small, and keep our LYS open.

If we all are going to buy yarn from the big companies exclusively it will be the end of the small LYS.

Reconsider. In the end even the one sheep mender is profiting from the shopping you did at a LYS.

Review: Rico Baby cotton soft print

Jullie weten van mijn zoektocht naar fijn katoen garen, en dat ik alle kansen aanpak om een nieuw merk te proberen.
Toen in Creatief Putten (op vakantie) mijn oog viel op de uitverkoop zag ik daar Rico Baby liggen, een merk waar ik al veel van had gehoord maar nog nooit had geprobeerd. Twee bolletjes gingen er mee (ik had mezelf een quotum opgelegd :)). Kijk eens naar dat schattige konijntje op de wikkel, daar zeg je toch geen nee tegen?

Okkie heeft vriendjes nodig vond ik en vorige week begon ik rustig aan aan een mini-versie van de octopus. Kathelijne werd al superenthousiast van het idee van nog meer octopusjes om mee te spelen, laat staan toen ik zei dat ze kleiner gingen worden! Ik begon met uitrekenen hoeveel kleiner ze moesten worden en begon met haken.

Zal ik eerlijk zijn? Het haakt super! Het is heerlijk zacht, splijt niet en voelt inderdaad op een manier dat je denkt "ja, dit is iets voor baby projectjes". Of het goed wasbaar is kan ik nu niet zeggen, maar als dat wel zo is dan is het perfect voor vestjes, omslagdoeken en dekentjes. Perfect.

Y'all know that I will not turn down an opportunity to try out a new yarn right? So when I spotted the discount section in the LYS at my vacation spot I picked it up and took it home. It were two balls of Rico Baby yarn and I knew I wanted to try it! Especially because of the cute bunny on the ball band.

I thought it would be nice to give Okkie a few mini-friends to play with. Kathelijne wholeheartedly agreed to that plan! So I started downsizing Okkie and crocheting a mini version (still working on it).

To be honest: it hooks up amazing. It's soft, it doesn't split and the colour is gorgeous. When you pat it, you really feel it's appropriate for babies if you know what I mean. I would love to know how it holds up after a few washings but I think it's the perfect yarn for baby capes, cardigans or baby blankets. Just perfect.

I can recommend this one!

On the Hook! 1/20

Het lijkt wel alsof de maand Januari voorbij glijdt en alleen maar over de MCAL gaat, maar ik wilde jullie iets anders laten zien vandaag!! Ik heb zojuist de laatste hand gelegd aan een nieuw ontwerp dat al een aantal keer voorbij kwam: een asymmetrische shawl met Fenna garen.

Wat een blijheid. Ik moet zeggen dat het een heerlijk garen is om mee te werken. Het haakte zo snel weg! Ook haalde ik het in mijn hoofd dat ik kleine kraaltjes aan de rand wilde hebben, maar dat idee liet ik zondag varen toen ik vijf keer zwoegend een kraaltje aan de draad had. Ik vlogde er over, maar ik moet zeggen dat ik dan toch echt grotere kraaltjes moet proberen de volgende keer!


Ik ga lekker draadjes wegwerken en ik denk dat zo rond eind februari dit patroon op de blog komt!

It seems to me that January is buzzing along fast and that the only thing happening here is the MCAL, but I can tell you there are other hooky stuff happening in the background. Today I finished my new design with the gorgeous slow change yarn called Fenna. You have seen it popping up here and there. It's an asymmetrical shawl with a cute border design, and it's just fab!

I am so happy with this project. The yarn was a breeze to work with, the design was flowing organically (can you say that?) and the only thing NOT working was the idea to add beads to the border design. I huffed and puffed, but as easybreezy as I showed in my last vlog it was an absolute horror to get like 5 beads onto the yarn. So I put them aside and just did the border with yarn.

This afternoon you will find me on the couch, weaving in my ends and I think I will share the pattern around the end of February with ya'll!

On & Off the Hook 3/22: Yarn Dreaming

Veel tijd om te haken heb ik helaas niet de afgelopen weken, ik leg mijn werkjes wel klaar, maar daar blijven ze dan ook liggen omdat ik teveel andere dingen heb te doen, vooral schoolwerk. Zo balen! Ik schrijf nu deze blogpost in de hoop dat ik strakjes of vanavond dan eventjes een halfuurtje kan gaan zitten met een shawl!

Maar de wolletjes worden wel af en toe gepakt en bepoteld en allerlei ideeen komen dan op: Ga ik er een shawl van maken? Een muts? Wat voor vorm moet hij hebben? Welke steken kan ik gebruiken? En zo mijmer ik dan even verder. Om het weg te leggen tot het tijd is. En eigenlijk is dat stiekem toch wel een hele leuke fase, zo nadenken en in je fantasie je werkje alvast te zien groeien.

Ja toch?

It seems I do not have enough moments to sit down and grab a WIP at the moment.. I lay my WIPs somewhere on my days off to grab but they tend to stay in the same spot for the whole day! Bummer. I am writing down this blogpost in the hope I will have a spare 10 minutes this afternoon or this evening haha!

But I do give the my lonely little balls of yarn a bit of attention when I think they feel neglected. I feel them, look at them and start thinking about the things I want to make with them: Will it become a shawl? How big? What kind of stitches will I use? What shape? And I dream for a bit. After that I put them back with their friends and just wait and try to work up the other projects until it's their turn to come out of my stash and play. I think it is such a nice phase, dreaming up those projects and let them grow in my phantasy!

Am I right? I think so!

Review: Drops Cloud

There are several new yarns being published for the wintercollection 14/15 in the big big yarn world, including with Drops!

Het is alweer druk in garen en wol land! Voor de wintercollectie zijn weer een flink aantal nieuwe garens gelanceerd, waaronder ook bij Drops!

Drops has added two  "blown" new yarns to the collection: Air and Cloud. The Air collection is the thinner option and Cloud the very bulky one!
I really wanted to try a bulky yarn for a change so I ordered 4 balls of Cloud in cream and brown.

Drops heeft twee "geblazen" garens toegevoegd aan de collectie: Air en Cloud. Het Air garen is de dunnere versie van Cloud, die heerlijk dik is!
Ik wilde heel graag eens een lekker dik garen proberen dus bestelde ik vier bollen (bolletjes kun je het niet noemen) Cloud in creme en bruin.

  




What a lovely yarn! It is extremely soft! If you look at the yarn itself it is more of a fleecy thread, and very soft on the outside. And very bulky.
I crocheted a hat with the yarn (see pic) with hook size 7 mm while the recommended hook size for Cloud is 9 mm (I crochet fairly loose).
The main thing I noticed with this yarn is that it is very soft but does not give while crocheting. It has no stretch.
If you take a look at the patterns designed by Drops for Cloud you can see that they are very loose, without negative ease (here are pattern ideas for Air). Something to keep in mind!

Wat een heerlijk garen! Het is zooooo enorm zacht! Je moet je voorstellen dat het een soort fleece achtige draden zijn, heel zacht aan de buitenkant. En lekker dik.
Ik haakte een muts er mee met haaknaald 7 terwijl 9 werd aangeraden (ik haak nogal los).
Wat me opviel was dat het garen wel zacht was maar niet heel erg meerekte.
Als je ook kijkt in de patronen die voor Cloud gebruikt worden zie je dat een kledingstuk met rek niet geschikt is voor dit garen (hier vind je patronen voor Air). Daar moet je wel rekening mee houden.

I do give the yarn a 4/5 stars compared to my favorites (Lang 120 or Debbie Bliss Cashmerino). It is a very nice and warm yarn, perfect for winter accesories such as a scarf or hat!

And as you might have thought I made a pattern of the hat. It will be published tomorrow! Watch this space!


Ik geef het garen zelf een dikke 8 als ik het moet vergelijken met mijn favoriete garen (merino wol bijvoorbeeld Lang 120 of Debbie Bliss Cashmerino). Het is een fijn en warm garen voor de winter, perfect voor mutsen of shawls!


En heel misschien zag je het al aan de foto... Ik maakte een patroon voor een muts met dit heerlijke garen! Het komt morgen live! Houd de blog in de gaten!

Stashbusting in 2013!

 

O dear. The Stash. 

I have been using my stash for the last year, spending only a little bit on new yarn.

But the stash still haunts me. I want to work through it in 2013!

So when I saw the mention of the "Stash-buster Challenge 2013" on Petals to Picots I thought it would be fun.

I am in!

So here is my stash as of the end of February.

I have not weighed my actual projects yet but I am up to 14 kilos. Yikes.

My goal is to halve it during this year!

At the end of every month I will look at what I have used for a project and calculate the new weight of my stash.
