Tesselation: A tessellation is created when a shape is repeated over and over again covering a plane without any gaps or overlaps.

Tesselatie: Een tesselatie is een creatie waarbij vormen zo herhaald worden dat ze naast elkaar liggen zonder ruimte of overlappingen.

One of my favorite artists is the Dutch lithograph M.C. Escher. When I went to visit my father-in-law for the first time one of the liviest memories is the complete Metamorphosis II hanging on his wall with all its interlocking shapes morphing into another... So beautiful! His work is so complex and so meticulously put together that it is not hard to be fascinated by all of his work. Sometimes you are looking at a tesselation he made and you can see that it all fits logically together, or you are looking at an impossible structure and you just think: "how on earth does this work?"

Een van mijn favoriete kunstenaars is M.C. Escher. Toen ik voor het eerst op bezoek ging bij mijn schoonvader hing daar in alle pracht Metamorphose II. Alle vormen gaan in elkaar over... zo mooi! Ik vind zijn werken een feest om naar te kijken en ze laten je hersens kraken. Ze zijn zo complex en vol details, ik denk dat er veel mensen dit prachtig vinden om naar te kijken! Als je naar zijn tesselaties kijkt zie je soms de ene vorm, soms de andere en het past allemaal prachtig in elkaar. Maar soms heeft hij ook tekeningen gemaakt waarbij je je achter je oor krabt en je afvraagt hoe in 's hemelsnaam dit in elkaar zit!

In one way the Waterfall just runs down, but at the left of the image you can see it goes upwards. And in a certain way it is logical (although it is ofcourse absolutely not natural/logical!).

Bij de Waterval zie je dat hij naar beneden stroomt, maar aan de linkerkant zie je dat hij opeens omhoog stroomt. Op het vlak van de tekening lijkt het te kloppen, maar in het echt kan het natuurlijk  niet! Meneer Escher is goed in gezichtsbedrog.

Now. A few years ago some math-addicted knitters and crocheters joined forces on Ravelry and formed the Woolly Thoughts group. This is a group dedicated to mathematical projects and illusion knitting/crocheting. One of the members, Jana Huck , decided to tackle one of Eschers most famous tesselations. I followed the process a bit and it was so much fun and awesome to see how she was experimenting with all the shapes. The end result was mindblowing!

Waar gaat deze post heen? Een aantal jaar geleden hebben een aantal wiskunde verslaafde hakers en breiers de handen ineen geslagen en de Woolly Thoughts groep opgericht. Dit is een groep waarin geexperimenteerd wordt met wiskundige invloeden op breien en haken, maar er wordt ook veel aandacht besteed aan illusiebreien/haken (heel leuk om te zien!). Op een gegeven moment opperde een van de leden, Jana Huck, om een tesselatie van Escher na te gaan maken. Ik heb het proces toen gevolgd en het was zo leuk om te zien hoe ze experimenteerde met de vormen. Het eindresultaat is machtig mooi!
