Breiboezem project // Knitted knockers (October Breast Cancer Awareness month)

Tijdens de vakantie ging ik op bezoek bij Creatief Putten en terwijl ik daar was kreeg ik een hoop van het gesprek mee dat een aantal dames al breiend aan het houden waren.

Zij deden mee aan Breiboezem project. Dit project zorgt er voor dat dames die een borst amputatie hebben ondergaan in plaats van de siliconen plakprotheses gebreide prothesen aangemeten krijgen.

Het idee voor deze blogpost stond al langer op de planning maar deze week is het eigenlijk toeval dat er twee dingen samenvielen: een herinnering op FB van zes jaar geleden waarin ik een Pink Ribbon magazine vasthield en het typen van deze post. Ook heb ik in mijn directe familie twee vrouwen zien worstelen met borstkanker.
Ik heb een flink aantal jaren om bovenstaande reden trouw het Pink Ribbon magazine gekocht en ook andere steunbetuigingen maar een aantal jaren geleden stopte ik toen bekend werd dat Pink Ribbon niet helder kon aangeven waar al het geld naar toe ging. Deze week stapte ik de tijdschriftenwinkel in en daar stond 'ie. De Pink Ribbon van dit jaar. En wat bleek: deze bevatte een helder verhaal over waar al het geld naar toe gaat. Toppie Pink Ribbon! Dus ik nam hem mee.

Hoe zit het dan met dat Breiboezem project? Pink Ribbon is alleen actief in oktober, maar Breiboezems worden het hele jaar gemaakt.
Hierbij zijn dus een flink aantal vrijwilligsters bij aangesloten die voor dames die echt last hebben van de plakprotheses (denk aan wonden die nog aan het genezen zijn of door de warmte irritatie krijgen van de plakgedeeltes) op aanvraag borsten breien.

Ik vind het superinitiatief! Dames die een borstamputatie (eenzijdig of tweezijdig) geven aan welke maat ze hebben en of ze met of zonder tepel willen ontvangen. Een breister die aangesloten is breit dan de boezem en stuurt ze op naar de regiocoordinator. Deze verspreidt dan de boezems naar de dames die ze hebben aangevraagd. Op dit moment moeten dames na een aanvraag best lang wachten dus hoe meer breisters hoe sneller het gaat. Voor de haaksters onder ons, er is nog geen haakpatroon voor boezems helaas (ik heb het wel even nagevraagd dus hopelijk weet ik daar binnenkort meer over, er is wel een Engels haakpatroon op de Knitted Knockers website).

When I went for yarn shopping in the summer vacation at the LYS Creatief Putten I overheard the group of ladies who were knitting away at the table, They were knitting for "Knitted Knockers" or Breiboezem as it is called in the Netherlands.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and since I had two close relatives struggling with the disease it is a yearly time to reflect on the ilness and the prevention of it. I try to endorse the Pink Ribbon campaign every year, but the last two years I sadly didn't buy the magazine or other charity things since I fell out of love for Pink Ribbon. They hit a rough patch two years ago when they couldn't show where the money went so I didn't support. This week I saw the magazine and bought it has it turned out they had done a pretty decent job pointing out where their money is going. Great job Pink Ribbon

Anyhoo, in Putten these lovely ladies were knitting boobs for women who lost their breasts to breast cancer and who are unable to wear the silicon protheses (for a variety of reasons).

It is such a wonderful gesture! The women who lost a breast can apply for knitted boobs in their size and with or without a nipple. An anonymous lady then knits up a pair of nice comfy cotton boobs and they get send to the women in need.

I love it. For now there are freely distributed patterns on the Knitted Knockers website, but if you want to participate I think it would be wise to contact the people behind the Knitted Knockers.

Pattern: Pink Breast Cancer Awareness bracelet // Roze Borskankermaand armbandje (US/NL)

Nodig:
- Roze garen (bijv. Drops Paris)
- Bijpassende haaknaald (bijv. 3 mm)
- bedeltjes

1. Haak 3 kettingen van lossen die de gewenste lengte hebben (ik zorgde ervoor dat ze zo lang waren dat de armband 2x om mijn pols kon)
2. Bij de 2e/andere kleur ketting rijg je voordat je gaat haken de bedels aan het garen. Haak je lossen en als je een bedel wilt toevoegen schuif je deze naar je naald, maak de omslag en maak dan de losse. Een videotutorial over haken met kralen vind je HIER.
3. Maak een vlecht met de drie kettingen en knoop de kettingen aan elkaar.

Natuurlijk kun je ook bijvoorbeeld 4 kettingen maken en met deze vier vlechten. Of alleen maar 1 ketting en dan met halve vasten de armband dikker maken. Of je houdt ze los van elkaar alsof je vier armbanden hebt. Het kan allemaal!

Delen wordt gewaardeerd! Meer aandacht is nodig voor de preventie van borstkanker. Kijk op de site van de Borstkanker Vereniging Nederland  of Pink Ribbon voor meer informatie.

This pattern will make a small and simple bracelet. It's perfect for beginners and/or little ones who like to give crochet a try. You can glam it up by adding more charms or beads, or keep it simple. You can use yarn, leather, thread, whatever you like!

You'll need:
- Pink yarn (e.g. Drops Paris
- a fitting crochet hook (e.g. 3 mm)
- charms

1. Make 3 long chains with your yarn in a desired length. Test by wrapping it around your wrist. Keep in mind the braiding will make it shorter (I wanted to wrap it twice around my wrist)

2. Before starting your last/2nd/other colour chain, slide the charms onto the yarn and start making your slip knot and make your chain with chain stitches. You can find a tutorial on crocheting with charms and beads HERE.

3. Braid your three chains and fasten the ends with a knot.

You can customize this pattern anyway you want. Glam it up, tone down. Braid or don't braid. Just experiment!

Autumn-ish

Officieel is hij begonnen, maar buiten moet de zichtbare herfst nog echt beginnen. Ik kijk vaak naar boven bij de bomen, maar de goudgele pracht laat nog even op zich wachten. Het enige dat wel opviel is dat al onze Oost-Indische kers is opgepeuzeld door hongerige rupsjes! Net als vorig jaar hebben we staan kijken hoe ze aan de blaadjes aan het munchen waren. Zo leuk! Ze zijn van harte welkom in onze tuin.

Vorige week bezocht ik de huisarts nadat ik het zat was dat ik al twee weken aan het hoesten was. Het blijkt dat ik een bovenste luchtweginfectie heb, maar dat mijn lichaam het zelf mag beter maken. Ik hoop dat het snel voorbij gaat want ik hoest me de longen uit mijn lijf. Het is voor het mij voor het eerst dat ik zoiets mag meemaken en natuurlijk twijfel ik wat af wat ik aankan met werk. Gelukkig waren ze op werk heel begripvol en was ik vorige week 1 dag thuis en kon ik afgelopen maandag een tweetal uren laten vallen. Vandaag moet ik maar weer kijken hoe het gaat en hopen dat ik niet al te erg in hoestbuien blijf hangen! Het is weer een wijze les wat betreft grenzen.

Ik begin weer een beetje mijn haak mojo terug te krijgen en de mini versie van Okkie neemt vorm aan. Nog een flink aantal pootjes en dan heb ik drie superschattige kleine inktvisjes.

Ook probeer ik al mijn achterstallige projectjes rustig aan op papier te zetten. Er zijn al een drietal ontwerpen helemaal af, maar ik moet het "alleen nog even uittypen". Een gevalletje uitstel, afstel haha. Een ontwerp heb ik gepland voor oktober, dus ik kan jullie snel bovenstaande shawl met jullie delen. Het is een supersimpel patroon, naar eigen smaak aan te passen en gehaakt met Fenna. Hij past perfect bij de herfst! Houd een oogje op de blog voor updates over deze shawl.


Van Christine bij Met Naald en Draad en Sigrid van KatKatKatoen kreeg ik een "One lovely blog" nominatie. Onwijs bedankt dames! Ik vind het heel lief van jullie. Ik ga er volgende week eens voor zitten hoe ik die blog award kan doorgeven..

Officially Autumn has started yesterday, but I am not seeing it yet when I'm outside. I am eagerly awaiting all the golden red colours but no luck. The only thing I did notice was the enormous amount of hungry caterpillars in our Nastartium this year. It is fun to watch them eat and we are more than happy to welcome them in our garden.
Last week I visited the GP after coughing for more than two weeks and luckily it's only an upper chest infection. Luckily yes, but energy wise it is kinda hard to balance work-life when you are coughing this much. It is a wise lesson for me! They were understanding at work, so I took sick leave on Friday and teached only a few hours last Monday. Today I have to work again and we'll see how it goes. Hopefully I will not be coughing that much.  

My crochet mojo is coming back to me I think and I've been happily knitting on my socks and hooking feet for the mini version of Okkie. I need quite a few since there are three little ones in my WIP bag. 7 down, 17 to go!

I am also trying to work through my backlog of designs. I have quite a few designs finished and they are just gathering dust! That's not what I wanted so I will try to publish them one by one. For October I have the perfect shawl design. The colour is amazing and the design is simple. What more would you want? Keep an eye on the blog!

Heat Wave

Wat was het heet de afgelopen dagen.... Ik zat in stoomhete lokalen met dampende pubers en probeerde les te geven met een tropenrooster....
Dit zijn we niet gewend he?!
Maar je merkt dat het weer anders is dan in de zomer. De nachten zijn nu koel en langzaamaan komen er herfstkleuren in de bomen en beginnen er blaadjes te vallen.
De kleuren van de bloemen trekken weg.
De laatste tomaten zijn aan het rijpen.
En het is tijd om de laatste appels te plukken. De meeste appels zijn door de plaatselijke halsbandparkieten naar beneden gekeild als geintje (gekke beesten).
Al puffend komt er niet veel uit mijn handen. Ik vond mooi garen bij de Action. Hier en daar doe ik een toertje aan mijn mini Okkie. Af en toe lees ik een bladzijde. Mijn gezondheid is niet al te best de laatste twee weken, kennelijk heb ik een hardnekkige hoest opgepikt van een collega, want ik ben niet de enige docent die tijdens het lesgeven even moet weglopen om uit te hoesten. Vandaag ga ik maar eens naar de huisarts.

Houd het hoofd koel, geniet van de koelere weersvoorspelling en ik zie jullie volgende week lieverds!

We were having a heat wave over here in the Netherlands the past few days, the temperatures were soaring.... I was teaching in steamy hot class rooms with sweating adolescents... We were lucky our school installed shortened class periods meaning school was out way more early than normal...
We Dutch are not used to this weather, we really aren't.
But the days are different compared to summer. The temperatures were sky high during daytime, but so much lower during night. 
You can see the Autumn colours creeping into the trees and here and there leaves are starting to fall.
The flower hues are diminishing.
The last tomates are getting red.
And it's time to harvest the remaining apples on our backyard tree.
Huffing and puffing I am not in the mood to do much. The kids also like to stay inside where it is cool. I hook a round here and there. I read a page or two. I found beautiful yarn at our local "Dollar Store". Taking it easy. The past two weeks I was also coughing my lungs out so today I got an appointment at the doctor and have a look it it's normal or something infectious.

Pattern: Kobus the Bunny

Kobus Konijn is een beetje verlegen.....
Hij wil zich graag aan jullie voorstellen.. Is hij niet lief? Ik vind hem zo schattig geworden!

Kobus gaat ook nog een paar vriendjes krijgen, maar voor nu is hij alleen. Ook gaat hij binnenkort lekker tuinieren en komt er een groente tuintje.

Review: Rico Baby cotton soft print

Jullie weten van mijn zoektocht naar fijn katoen garen, en dat ik alle kansen aanpak om een nieuw merk te proberen.
Toen in Creatief Putten (op vakantie) mijn oog viel op de uitverkoop zag ik daar Rico Baby liggen, een merk waar ik al veel van had gehoord maar nog nooit had geprobeerd. Twee bolletjes gingen er mee (ik had mezelf een quotum opgelegd :)). Kijk eens naar dat schattige konijntje op de wikkel, daar zeg je toch geen nee tegen?

Okkie heeft vriendjes nodig vond ik en vorige week begon ik rustig aan aan een mini-versie van de octopus. Kathelijne werd al superenthousiast van het idee van nog meer octopusjes om mee te spelen, laat staan toen ik zei dat ze kleiner gingen worden! Ik begon met uitrekenen hoeveel kleiner ze moesten worden en begon met haken.

Zal ik eerlijk zijn? Het haakt super! Het is heerlijk zacht, splijt niet en voelt inderdaad op een manier dat je denkt "ja, dit is iets voor baby projectjes". Of het goed wasbaar is kan ik nu niet zeggen, maar als dat wel zo is dan is het perfect voor vestjes, omslagdoeken en dekentjes. Perfect.

Y'all know that I will not turn down an opportunity to try out a new yarn right? So when I spotted the discount section in the LYS at my vacation spot I picked it up and took it home. It were two balls of Rico Baby yarn and I knew I wanted to try it! Especially because of the cute bunny on the ball band.

I thought it would be nice to give Okkie a few mini-friends to play with. Kathelijne wholeheartedly agreed to that plan! So I started downsizing Okkie and crocheting a mini version (still working on it).

To be honest: it hooks up amazing. It's soft, it doesn't split and the colour is gorgeous. When you pat it, you really feel it's appropriate for babies if you know what I mean. I would love to know how it holds up after a few washings but I think it's the perfect yarn for baby capes, cardigans or baby blankets. Just perfect.

I can recommend this one!
