Pattern: Roland - Unisex Crochet Hat

 

I had so much fun making this hat! It was easy breezy and a new type of yarn sliding through my fingers. Almost all of the family tried it on :)

General Information

This pattern is written in US Crochet terms.

Skill level: Advanced beginner

Abbreviations

Ch: chain (yoh, pull through)

Sl st: slip stitch (insert hook in stitch, yoh and pull through stitch and loop on hook)

Sc: single crochet (insert hook in stitch, yoh, pull through stitch (two loops on hook), yoh and pull through both loops)

Hdc: Yarn over, insert hook in stitch, yarn over and pull up loop (three loops on hook), yarn over  and draw through all loops on hook

Dc: double crochet (yoh, insert hook in stitch, yoh, pull through stitch, *yoh, pull through two loops* two times)

Tr: treble (yoh twice, insert hook in stitch, *yoh hook, pull through two loops* three times)

Post stitches

FPDC: front post double crochet (Yarn over, insert hook from front to back to front around post of corresponding stitch below, yarn over and pull up loop [yarn over, draw through 2 loops on hook] 2 times)

BPDC: back post double crochet (yarn over, insert hook from back to front to back around post of corresponding stitch below, yarn over and pull up loop [yarn over, draw through 2 loops on hook] 2 times)

Notes

I make small hats, teen/small adult size, for my tiny head approximately 21” in diameter or 52 cm for my 56 cm head. If you need to go larger you need to loosen up gauge. I think it will fit a normal size adult with a bit of stretch (I tried on my hubby and it did fit sort of.)

 

 

Materials

Crochet hook size 7 mm or size needed to obtain gauge

1 ball of Drops Cloud – Cream

1 ball of Drops Cloud - Brown

Colour A: Brown

Colour B: Cream

Pattern

Written instructions

Hat:

With colour A: Ch3, sl st to close

Round 1: Ch3 (counts as dc), dc 11 times into ring, sl st with colour B to 3rd ch of ch3 to close round. (12 dc)

Round 2:  With colour B, ch3, dc into same st, *dc twice into each st*, repeat between ** 10 more times, sl st with colour A to 3rd ch of ch3 to close round (24 dc)

Round 3: With colour A, Ch2 (does not count as a st), *dc twice in first dc, ch1, sk next dc*, repeat between ** until end of round, sl st with colour B to first dc made to close round.

Round 4: With colour B, ch2, dc into unworked dc from round 2, *ch2, dc into unworked dc from round 2*, repeat between ** until the last unworked dc, make a ch2, start your dc, yo hook, insert hook in stitch, pull through (3 loops on hook), yo hook and pull through 2 loops (2 loops on hook), yo hook with colour A, pull through 2 loops (1 loop on hook and you finished your last dc), sl st with your new colour to first ch st made in this round.

Round 5: With colour A, ch2 (does not count as a st), *dc into each dc of round 3, ch2*, repeat between ** until end of round, sl st with colour B to first dc made to close round.

Round 6: With colour B, ch2, dc twice into each dc of round 4, *ch2, dc twice into each dc of round 4*, repeat between ** until last repeat, make a ch2, start your dc, yo hook , insert hook in stitch, pull through (3 loops on hook), yo hook and pull through 2 loops (2 loops on hook), yo hook with colour A, pull through 2 loops (1 loop on hook and you finished your last dc), sl st with your new colour to first ch st made in this round.

At this point my hat was large enough for me.

Round 7: With colour A, ch2 (does not count as a st), *dc into each dc of round 5, ch2*, repeat between ** until end of round, sl st with colour B to first dc made to close round.

Round 8: With colour B ch2, dc once into each dc of round 4, *ch2, dc once into each dc of round 6*, repeat between ** until last repeat, make a ch2, start your dc, yo hook , insert hook in stitch, pull through (3 loops on hook), yo hook and pull through 2 loops (2 loops on hook), yo hook with colour A, pull through 2 loops (1 loop on hook and you finished your last dc), sl st with your new colour to first ch st made in this round.

After this do not increase. Repeat round 7 and 8 until your hat is the desired length. Keep in mind you are working for each round two rounds below. The rounds with colour A will go into the previous round with colour A and the rounds with colour B will go into the previous round with colour B. Make the hat has high as you want, each round will give more slouch.

Edge:

With colour B (letting colour A dangle behind work)

Round 1: Ch3, *bpdc around next dc, fpdc around next dc*, repeat between ** until end of round, sl st to first ch3 to close round. Turn

Round 2: Ch3, *bpdc around next dc, fpdc around next dc*, repeat between ** until end of round. Sl st to first ch3 to close round. Turn.

Round 3: ch1, sc in same st, sc once into each st, sl st to first sc to close round. Fasten off.

Make a pompom!
