Pattern: "Knitted" Slouchy hat

General information

This pattern is written in US Crochet terms.

Skill level: Intermediate

Special Stitches

Foundation row

Forward pass: Insert hook into back bump of first stitch, yo, pull up loop, leave loop on hook. Repeat for all chain stitches

Return pass: Ch1, * yo, pull through 2 loops*, repeat between ** until you have one loop left on hook

Tunisian Knit Stitch (TKS)

Forward pass: * Insert hook between both front vertical and back vertical bar from front right to back left, yo, pull up loop*, repeat between ** until the last stitch. For the last stitch, insert hook between left loop plus back bump and most right loop (this means you will have the most left loop and the back bump on the left side of your hook and the most right loop on the right side of your hook), yo, pull up loop.

Return pass: Ch1, *yo, pull through 2 loops*, repeat between ** until you have one loop left on hook.

Finishing row

* Insert hook in between both front vertical and back vertical bar from front right to back left, yo, make a slip stitch (1 loop on hook)*, repeat between ** until you have worked your way to the end of the row.

Increasing: Make your stitch, and make an increase in between the stitch you just made and the next stitch.

Working with a double ended hook: Make two balls of your yarn, make a forward pass with one end of the hook until you have so many stitches on your hook that the circle starts to pull, turn your hook, attach the second ball and start a return pass until you have 2-3 loops left. Turn again, work your forward pass etc.

Camel stitch: start with making a round with single crochet, at the second round insert hook from back to front, around stitch post, and front to back, yoh, pull through stitch (two loops on hook), yoh, pull through both loops

Abbreviations

Ch: chain (yoh, pull through)

Sl st: slip stitch (insert hook in stitch, yoh and pull through stitch and loop on hook)

Sc: single crochet (insert hook in stitch, yoh, pull through stitch (two loops on hook), yoh and pull through both loops)

Dc: double crochet (yoh, insert hook in stitch, yoh, pull through stitch, *yoh, pull through two loops* two times)

Notes

Yarn is held double throughout the pattern.

The pattern is written for an almost 7” diameter hat (top circle) which is a small womans hat. Adjust gauge or add rounds if you want it bigger or smaller.

Materials

Double sided Tunisian crochet hook  11.5 mm or P and a 10 mm normal crochet hook

Yarn: Wibra Saskia in pink and purple 

Pattern

When crocheting this hat, do not turn your work. The hat is worked in a spiral throughout the pattern.

 

Chain 3, sl st to first st to make a closed circle.

Round 1: Ch1, sc 6 times into circle, close round with a sl st into first st.

You will be working in a spiral, so make sure you mark your first st, and reposition the marker after each round.

Round 2: Ch1 (this ch st is the only ch you have to make because after this you will be working in a spiral and you will always have enough loops on your hook), *pull up a loop in first sc, pull up loop in between two sc*, repeat between ** until end of round. You will have 12 vertical bars at the end of the round. 

Round 3: *TKS in first st, increase directly next to this st, TKS in next st*, repeat between ** until end of round (18 TKS)

Round 4: *TKS in first st, increase next to this st, TKS in next two st*, repeat between ** until end of round (24 TKS)

Round 5: *TKS in first st, increase next to this st, TKS in next three st*, repeat between ** until end of round (30 TKS)

Round 6: *TKS in first st, increase next to this st, TKS in next four st*, repeat between ** until end of round (36 TKS)

You will have a circle which will measure approximately 6.75”-7” from side to side. This will fit a small women’s head with a little bit of negative ease

After this your circle will measure about 6.75-7” at its widest point. This is a small women’s size with a little bit of negative ease. If you want it bigger, add one round.

After increasing you will add rounds without increasing to give the hat length. If you want a beanie hat make it as long until it reaches the top of your ears. Adding more rounds will give you more slouch. Continue until your hat is long enough.

Switch to your normal crochet hook (10 mm) and make a round of single crochet. After this round you will start the brim of the hat and make camel stitches (see “stitches”). If your brim is wide enough (about 1.5”- 2”) make one round with slip stitches whilst inserting the hook like you did with the camel stitch.

Fasten off, weave in ends!
