Friday Find: I want to Quilt!

My hands are itching. Along with the crochet zen vibe came a certain stirring in the quilt area of my brain....

My goal was to finish two quilt tops this year. One is done, minus the border. The other one is still waiting. The start of the patching is in the pic above....

That would be my Easy Street mystery quilt from Quiltville. I adore Bonnie's patterns! I started out with the first clue but stopped after that because I just could not wrap my head around flying geese. Maybe this year I will understand?  This Mystery is from november/december 2013 and the book the pattern can be found is over here (it's "More adventures with leaders and enders"). I am going to dig up the clues and see where all the fabric has gone to! And if you like, there will be a new Mystery hosted by Bonnie at the end of this year!


I know quilting is very labor intensive, but just as long as the patchwork is done, I will be very happy!

How To: Reading Crochet Patterns

Ever had any trouble reading crochet patterns?

I got headaches from them the first few times. They seemed so complicated and I just could not wrap my head around all the abbreviations, numbers and all the lines.

It was hard.

So after some failed tries I threw my work aside and moped.

Then I thought: "Maybe there isn't an hidden message behind it. Should I be all sheepy and just follow the directions literally?"

And that was an "Eureka!" moment!

Ik denk dat iedere beginner worstelt met geschreven haakpatronen...

Ik kreeg er hoofdpijn van de eerste paar keer dat ik alle afkortingen en zinnen probeerde te begrijpen. Het leek wel abracadabra en ik begreep maar niet wat de ontwerpers er nou mee bedoelden.

Het was puzzelen.

Na een aantal mislukte pogingen gooide ik dan mijn werk opzij en mopperde.

En toen dacht ik: "Misschien is er wel geen achterliggende bedoeling, en moet ik gewoon schaapachtig de aanwijzingen volgen?"

En dat was een "Eureka!" moment!

On & Off the Hook! 10/29

I am pretty proud of myself that I have finished my lovely gradient socks! Look at the colours, yum! Determined to finish them I told hubby I needed to hook hook hook yesterday evening and accomplished to fasten off sock no. 1. Yes!!!!!

Ik ben eigenlijk wel een heel klein beetje trots op mezelf dat mijn mooi gekleurde sokken helemaal af zijn. Wat een heerlijkheid en zo mooi!
Ik was vastbesloten om ze af te krijgen vandaag of morgen, dus gisteravond zei ik tegen de vent dat ik echt als een malle wilde haken en ik kreeg het zowaar voor elkaar om sok nummer 1 af te hechten. Yesss!!

So today I am walking in extra soft socks and the crochet stitches are massaging my feet. Hmmmm... But will I crochet socks with Drops Delight again? Never. It has too much grip and felts like there is no tomorrow. I will grab any ball of Regia for my next pair of socks. You can find the pattern I used in this post.

Dus vandaag loop ik heerlijk op wol. Alleen Drops Delight ga ik echt niet nog een keer gebruiken om sokken te haken. Het grijpt te veel in elkaar en vervilt te snel. Volgende keer weer lekker mijn vertrouwde Regia. Het patroon dat ik gebruikt heb voor de sokken vind je terug in deze post.


In the mean time I also added some rows to my ripple blanket. Can you see the extra touch I have added to the pattern? I will explain what I did very soon with a small tutorial.


Ondertussen haakte ik verder aan mijn deken en ben ik toe aan een nieuw "extra" toertje. Zie je wat ik gedaan heb? Ik leg het binnenkort uit.

I also started a new design with ubar mega fluo yarn. The brightes pink ever. It is fluo yarn from Regia (Fluormania)! Could you have guessed haha! I just adore Regia. Very good price, holds up very nice and comes in a wide array of shades and color mixes. Now I do know this colour combo will not appeal to everyone, so I decided to crochet a second shawl along this one. More about this shawl later on.

Ook ben ik een nieuw ontwerp begonnen. Met heerlijk fluoresceren mega fel roze garen (Fluormania). Het is sokkengaren van Regia. Natuurlijk Regia. Ik houd echt te veel van dit merk en ik houd van dit soort knalkleurtjes :) Het is niet al te duur, is enorm sterk en in zo veel kleuren/mixen te verkrijgen! Perfecte combinatie! Maar omdat ik weet dat niet iedereen dat mooi vindt (toch?) maak ik hem ook nog in een neutrale kleur. Kan ik meteen mijn patroon testen!

Ik ben in een lekkere haak groove, zo fijn gevoel! Geen stress, gewoon lekker prutten met mijn favoriete dikte garen.

How To: Crochet the Magic Loop

Soooo in my attempt at creating video tutorials I have managed to make two videos on how to crochet the magic loop, in both English and Dutch!

The magic loop is perfecr for creating a tight, snug and neat centre no matter how many stitches you use for the first round. It is a bit tricky to get used to, but it's worth the effort!
Have fun watching it!

Jaja het is gelukt! Ik heb gisteren twee video's opgenomen om te laten zien hoe je een magische lus of magic loop maakt. Ook in het Nederlands!

De magic loop is een manier om een mooie nette en dicht beginpunt te krijgen zonder lossen te haken. Daarnaast maakt het ook niet uit hoeveel steken je gebruikt voor het midden, het past altijd!

On Rattles, Squeakers and Bells

My dear readers, you probably have seen the o so cute Rattle Toy pattern I published yesterday. What I did not mention was what kind of rattle I used and where to find a safe rattle to put in that toy!

I bought the rattle at Echt Studio but it seems they do not sell it online.

After a bit of searching I found the exact same rattles I used at creamijn.nl. She also has kidfriendly and stuffingfriendly squeakers and bells. Check it out!

Mijn lieve lezers, jullie hebben vast gezien dat ik gisteren een patroon voor een rammel speeltje heb gepubliceerd! Wat ik alleen niet zo duidelijk heb neergezet is wat voor rammelaar ik heb gebruikt om in het speeltje te doen en waar ik hem vandaan had.

Wat blijkt? Ik heb de rammelaar bij Echt Studio in de winkel gekocht, maar ze verkopen hem dus niet in de webwinkel helaas.

Na een beetje zoeken op Google vond ik bij Creamijn.nl allerlei soorten piepers en rammelaars, en ook de schijf die ik gebruikt heb. Alsjeblieft!

Skill level: Advanced beginner

Abbreviations

Ch: chain (yoh, pull through)

Sl st: slip stitch (insert hook in stitch, yoh and pull through stitch and loop on hook)

Sc: single crochet (insert hook in stitch, yoh, pull through stitch (two loops on hook), yoh and pull through both loops)

Hdc: Yarn over, insert hook in stitch, yarn over and pull up loop (three loops on hook), yarn over  and draw through all loops on hook

Dc: double crochet (yoh, insert hook in stitch, yoh, pull through stitch, *yoh, pull through two loops* two times)

Materials

Rowan cotton dk  in assorted colours

Crochet hook  4 mm/G

Pantyhose, Rattle (closed one), Polyester Stuffing *Here is a post on the rattle!*

Written instructions

Ch3, sl st to close ring

Round 1: Ch1 (does not count as a stitch), sc 6 times into ring. Sl st to 1st sc to close round (6 sc). Do not turn.

Round 2: Ch1, sc twice in each st, sl st to first sc to close round (12 sc)

Fasten off colour, attach new colour in a random spot.

After each following round, fasten off and attach new colour in a random spot. You will have rounds in one colour.

Round 3: Ch1, *sc twice in first st, sc once into next st *, repeat between ** five more times, sl st to first sc to close round (18 sc)

Round 4: Ch1, *sc twice in first st, sc once into next two st*, repeat between ** five more times, sl st to first sc to close round (24 sc)

Round 5: Ch1, *sc twice in first st, sc once in next three st*, repeat between ** five more times, sl st to first sc to close round (30 sc)

Round 6: Ch1, *sc twice in first st, sc once in next four st*, repeat between ** five more times, sl st to first sc to close round (36 sc)

Round 7: Ch1, *sc twice in first st, sc once in next five st*, repeat between ** five more times, sl st to first sc to close round (42 sc)

Round 8: Ch1, *sc twice in first st, sc once in next six st*, repeat between ** five more times, sl st to first sc to close round (48 sc)

Round 9: Ch1, sc twice in first st, sc once in next seven st*, repeat between ** five more times, sl st to first sc to close round (54 sc)

Round 10: Ch1, sc twice in first st, sc once in next eight st*, repeat between ** five more times, sl st to first sc to close round (60 sc)

Round 11: Ch1, sc twice in first st, sc once in next nine st*, repeat between ** five more times, sl st to first sc to close round (66 sc)

Fasten off. Make another circle

Place two circles wrong sides together and attach the same colour as used for last round by pulling the strand of yarn through both circles in a random stitch.

Start round 12 but stop when you are two-thirds done. Start stuffing a pantyhose, put in a rattle, insert pantyhose (toes first) into opening of circles and stuff until firm. Tie off pantyhose, cut off excess fabric and continue with round 12.

Round 12: Ch1, sc twice in first st, sc once in next ten st*, repeat between ** five more times, sl st to first sc to close round (72 sc)

Round 13 (Edge): *Sl st to next st, (hdc, dc, hdc) into next st, sl st in next st*, repeat between **until you reached your starting point, sl st to first sl st, fasten off.

Friday Find: Scheepjes Stonewashed

Have you seen this scrummy yummy yarn yet? It is so beautiful, very calm and soothing and just gorgeous.

It is Scheepjes Stone Washed (and there is also a thicker version, the Stone Washed XL) and it's the talk of the town at the moment.

Heb je dit heerlijke garen al gezien? Het is echt zo mooi, rustig en kalm qua kleuren. Je wordt er helemaal zen van.

Het is Scheepjes Stone Washed (verkrijgbaar in een dunne en een XL versie) en het is echt heel erg hip op dit moment.

Could you help me? I lost my daughter...

My heart stopped. I searched frantically for her. Everywhere there were kids running and screaming but I could not find a familiar t shirt or face.

A feeling of panic crept up and I felt a clenching in my neck.

I could not find my daughter!

We went to an indoor playground this morning and I packed a lot of grading work, some crochet work and something to read. And I let them run wild. She was already testing the boundaries by trying to go to the big kids playground. I let her, although she is only 3.5 years old.

And while I was waiting for the lunch I found her in the small kids playground and told her to stay there so I could find her when our lunch was ready.  She didn't. After half an hour of frantic searches  (inlcuding having her called over the intercom) she walked out of a nearby room as if nothing had happened! 

My first reaction was relief, my second was anger! I felt bad after I had spoken to her, telling her I was very worried and trying to keep back my tears. Maybe I overreacted but I think this is one of the biggest fears for parents: losing track of your kid...

I felt so guilty. I should be more careful, checking on her more often. On the other hand, she may be very little, but a bit of freedom is very good for her. 

And now she is painting and being the most adorable kid in the world...

Have you ever had the same experience? How did you cope on the next similar playground outing?

Mijn hart stopte. Ik zocht naarstig naar een bekend shirtje, haar haren en haar gezicht. Overal renden kinderen al klauterend en schreeuwend rond.

Ik voelde langzaam paniek opkomen en een gevoel alsof mijn keel werd dichtgeknepen...

Ik kon haar nergens vinden!

We gingen naar een binnenspeeltuin omdat het enorm regende. Ik had nakijkwerk, haakwerk, wat te lezen ingepakt met het idee om even daar te kunnen knallen qua werk en dat de kids helemaal los konden gaan. Ze was me al aan het testen omdat ze eigenlijk met haar grote broer in het speelding voor 5+ wilde en een paar rondjes samen mocht wel. Ze is klein maar met haar 3.5 jaar geen teer dingetje.

En terwijl ik aan het wachten was op de lunch vond ik haar in de kleine speeltuin en vroeg ik haar om daar te blijven zodat ik haar makkelijk terug kon vinden. Kennelijk was die boodschap niet overgekomen want toen het eten klaar was kon ik haar niet vinden... Een half uur veel rondlopen, roepen, Geert in de grote speeltuin laten klimmen om te zoeken en zelfs haar laten omroepen over de intercom.. Ik liep terug naar de tafel en daar was ze zomaar! Het bleek dat ze in een aparte ruimte was waar we eigenlijk nog nooit geweest waren.

Mijn eerste reactie was er een van opluchting, en daarna werd ik boos. Dat verdient natuurlijk geen schoonheidsprijs maar ik had toch echt wat met haar afgesproken. Ik probeerde te kalmeren, tegen de tranen vechtend, want ik denk dat het echt wel een van de ergste dingen is die een ouder kan overkomen: je kind uit het oog verliezen en kwijtraken..

Ik voelde me wel schuldig, ik had vaker een rondje moeten lopen, haar in het vizier houden. Maar goed, het is ook wel een heel zelfstandig meisje, en een beetje vrijheid kan ze ook wel aan.

En nu? Nu zit ze te schilderen en is ze het schattigste meisje ooit..

Heb jij ooit dezelfde ervaring gehad? Wat deed je anders de keer erop dat je met je kids in een onoverzichtelijk speelgebied was?

A New Tiny Nephew

O dear. Look at those pics. A newborn baby! These pics were taken on my first visit to my little nephew, one week old.
He is now 3 weeks old and oh my gosh he is still so tiny!

I went to my sister yesterday to help her out with the household tasks she still cannot do. And I got to show her some babycarrying tips since the little man is quite hands on. He got to have a taste of my old Storchenwiege carrier and I got to wear him whilst vacuuming. He zonked out completely. It felt really special to have an infant in a babywrap after more than 3 years! I had a lovely sleeping tiny infant on my chest! Soooo adorable (just in case you want to know there were no rattling ovaries! :) ).

With two new additions to the human race in the past few months I designed a baby toy for the first time. A lovely colourful, easy to smash, bat and throw for all cute kiddies!

I gave the first version to my best friend (which was already perfect), and the finalized version to my sister.
They were both very happy and I hope this will be a much loved toy for both babies!

The pattern is almost ready so it will be published somewhere between today and this weekend!

Ooooo kijk nou! Wat een heerlijke baby foto's van een  nieuw mensje :) Deze foto's nam ik op mijn eerste bezoekje aan mijn nieuwe neefje, net een week oud.
Hij is nu alweer 3 weken maar man o man wat is hij nog klein!

Ik ben afgelopen dinsdag bij mijn zusje even wezen helpen met de huishoudelijke taken die ze nog niet kan. En ik mocht haar wat babydraagtips geven aangezien de kleine man veel aandacht vraagt. Hij mocht in mijn oude Storchenwiege bij mijn zusje even zitten (daar moest ik even bij helpen) en ik mocht hem dragen tijdens het stofzuigen. Hij was volledig ontspannen en sliep als een roosje in de draagdoek. Na meer dan 3 jaar had ik weer een babietje slapend in de draagdoek! Zoooo schattig (maar geen rammelende eierstokken gelukkig!)

Met twee nieuwe aanwinsten voor de mensheid op deze aardkloot dacht ik dat het echt tijd was om iets voor babietjes te haken, dus bedacht ik een babyspeeltje. Lekker kleurig en fleurig, heerlijk om op te meppen, mee te gooien en te rammelen!

Ik gaf de eerste versie aan mijn beste vriendin (die eigenlijk al perfect was), en de tweede aan mijn zusje.
Ze waren er heel erg blij mee!

Het patroon is bijna klaar dus binnen nu en een paar dagen staat deze online!

All New: Video Tutorials/Vlogs!

Hello hello my dear readers!

Yes you read it right, I am starting out video taping my hands, hook and yarn to help out new crocheters by showing the beginnings of crochet!

Two weeks ago I asked a simple question on several Dutch crochet fb groups: "I have a camera on hand and I am not afraid to use it, what do you want me to show?"

I got more than a hundred replies and I have made an inventory of all the subjects and sorting them into several categories. And I gave a shot at trying the video camera my hubby bought several years ago.

Een hele goede dag lieve lezers!

Ja, je hebt het goed gelezen, vanaf vandaag ben ik ook te horen en te zien op video met mijn handen, haaknaald en garen om haaksters/hakers te helpen met beginnerstechnieken!

Twee weken geleden vroeg ik op een aantal Nederlandse haakgroepen op FB: "Ik heb een camera tot mijn beschikking, wat mis je nu vooral op YouTube aan Nederlandse haakfilmpjes?"

Ik kreeg meer dan honderd reacties en ik heb een lijstje gemaakt van alles suggesties en onderwerpen en heb ze gerangschikt naar niveau en categorie. En ik heb dus de camera uitgetest die mijn lieve echtgenoot een aantal jaren geleden kocht.



Well, after two video taping sessions I am happy to announce that my YouTube channel, Zomaar Een Dag, is now alive and kicking with several Dutch Learn to Crochet video's!

I am in the process of filming them in English as well, so in the upcoming weeks more and more video's will be uploaded.

I would love to make this project with input of you, my dear reader, so if you have any suggestions for a video or tutorial please drop me a note over here! I am going to work my way from the basics (now only available in Dutch, English will follow shortly) up to more advanced techniques and stitches.



Nu, na twee video sessies (en ook de derde) kan ik al stuiterend van blijdschap melden dat mijn YouTube kanaal, Zomaar Een Dag, helemaal live is met een aantal Nederlandse Leren Haken video's!

Er komen nog meer Nederlandse aan (hopelijk werkt het weer en de kinderen mee) en daarna ga ik ook met de Engelse aan de slag. De komende weken wordt het kanaal dus voller.

Ik zou het super vinden om dit project gestuurd te laten worden door jullie, mijn beste lezers, dus als je een suggestie hebt voor een video of tutorial laat het me weten in een comment of berichtje! Ik ga eerst de basis neerzetten en daarna gaat het verder met gevorderde technieken en steken.

Just the two of us..

The past few days were very quiet and adult-paced. The kids are away. Geert and Kathelijne are probably spoiled and loved at their grandparents house while we are taking a tiny break from parenting!

After a bit of city hopping and (book) shopping, lovely dinners and a pub visit, we spent a day at a spa for the very first time today! It was fun and a whole day of poodling and sauna really created a zen feeling.

Tomorrow I have blocked the whole morning and I will work hard on some tutorials. Yes, I promise!

De afgelopen dagen waren heel erg stil en konden we onze eigen gang gaan. De kindjes zijn de hort op. Geert en Kathelijne worden waarschijnlijk lekker verwend en verzorgd bij hun opa en oma, en wij nemen even een pauze van het papa en mama-zijn!

We zijn even heerlijk wezen stadten, uit eten gaan en lekker even de pub in geweest. Vandaag gingen we voor het eerst van ons leven naar een spa. Heerlijk gepoedeld en in de sauna zitten zweten en gewoon lekker ontspannen.

Morgenochtend heb ik de hele ochtend vrijgehouden om aan de blog te werken en ik heb al flink ideeen voor tutorials. Beloofd!

Tutorial: Weaving in Ends/Draadjes wegwerken

Every once in a while I look at the links from where you are stopping by and I check what kind of keywords you put into Google and will lead you to this blog.
"Draadjes wegwerken" or weaving in ends was one of them this week. I know I use those words a lot in my patterns but I never have made a tutorial on how to weave your ends in properly and neatly.

Truth is: I hate weaving in ends. I can cope with two ends when I am making a shawl but I am always always lured into multicolour projects and I keep "forgetting" to weave in my ends as I work on such a project.

But I have to have to be stern with myself.
So I made a tutorial whilst I was weaving in ends of my new blanket.

Om de zoveel tijd kijk ik bij mijn bezoekers naar van welke links ze vandaan komen en wat voor zoekwoorden ze in Google invoeren en dan bij mij uitkomen.
"Draadjes wegwerken" was deze week ingevoerd! Ik weet dat ik deze woorden in  mijn patronen gebuik maar ik had de techniek nog nooit uitgelegd.

Ik haat het, om heel eerlijk te zijn. Ik ben zo'n haakster die het liefst tot einde wacht met dit klusje. Twee eindjes bij een shawl vind ik prima maar ik laat me veel te gauw verleiden tot een kleurrijk project en dan "vergeet" ik tijdens het haken die eindjes weg te werken.

Ik moet natuurlijk gewoon streng zijn voor mezelf.

Dus wat deed ik, ik werkte de eindjes weg en terwijl dat deed maakte ik deze tutorial!

Weave in ends: The Lazy Way (Draadjes wegwerken: de Luie Manier)

Take your scissors and a darning needle and place them somewhere nearby.

Pak een schaar en naald met stompe punt en leg hem ergens in de buurt.

 

Ignore the needle for this way of weaving in ends! This is a perfect manner for stripes or solid crochet (same type of stitches next to eachother).

Negeer je naald bij deze manier van eindjes wegwerken! Dit is een perfecte manier bij strepen of haakwerk dat redelijk dicht is (allemaal dezelfde steken naast elkaar)

 

I am going to attach a new colour (blue) for a new ripple and keep it the same length as my end of my last row (the white one). I like to leave a 7" end. Turn your work to start crocheting.

Ik ga een nieuwe kleur aanhechten (blauw) voor een nieuwe golf en zorg er voor dat hij dezelfde lengte heeft als het eind van de laatste golf (wit). Ik zorg altijd voor een eind van 15 cm.  Keer je werk om te beginnen met haken.

 

With your index finger, keep your ends snugly to the back of your work but in such a way you can make your stitches around those two threads. In the picture above you can see I am inserting my hook for a dc but my hook is also below the ends. Make a stitch.

Met je wijsvinger houd je nu je draadjes stevig tegen de achterkant van je haakwerk aan en dat doe je op zo'n manier dat je om de draadjes heen kunt haken. In de foto hierboven zie je dat ik mijn naald insteek om een stokje te maken maar dat mijn haaknaald dus onder de eindjes zit. Maak een steek.

 

After a few stitches your ends are "fastened" by the new stitches you are making. Who said you needed to weave in the ends?

Na een paar steken zitten je eindjes dus vast in de nieuwe steken. Wie had het over met een naald eindjes wegwerken?

 

 Most of the times I do a few repeats or until I have crocheted over all the length of my end.

Meestal doe ik een paar herhalingen of totdat ik bijna over de gehele lengte van mijn eindjes heb gehaakt.

 

Turn over your work when you get to the end (you are looking at the wrong side of the fabric).

 Keer je werk eventjes om als je bij het einde van de eindjes bent (je kijkt nu naar de verkeerde kant).

 

Pull a bit on the ends aaaaand snip!

Trek een beetje aan de eindjes en knip!

 

Done!

Weaving in ends: The Official Way (Draadjes wegwerken: De Officiele Manier)

 

Take your needle, insert yarn and search for a row where you can easily hide your ends behind. You want to run the needle behind the stitches easily. I chose the pink row and therefore I have to work my way first towards the pink row.

Neem je naald, rijg je eindje er aan en zoek een rij waar je netjes je draad achter de steken kunt verstoppen. Ik koos hier de roze, dan moet ik eerst mijn eindje ietsje naar beneden inweven.

 

Here we go. I go through a loop at the back of the double crochet.

Hier gaan we. Ik ga door een lusje aan de achterkant van het stokje.

 

And I work my way behind those pink stitches.

En ik ga met de naald door de lussen van de roze steken.

 

Here is an example with a yellow row where I put my needle.

Hier is een voorbeeld met een gele rij waar ik mijn naald insteek.

And another example! I run my end behind a repeat or two (most of the time I do about 20 stitches and stop at a cluster spot).

En nog een voorbeeld! Ik laat mijn eindje achter ongeveer twee herhaling lopen (of iets van 20 steken en dan stop ik op een plek waar er meer dan 1 steek zit).

In the end it's all worth it!

Op het einde zie je toch wel dat het het waard is!
